- Minimal scheduled activities mean the emphasis here is on relaxation
- Hotel restaurant receives raves for its cuisine and service by past guests on TripAdvisor
- For more action, downtown Puerto Plata is about a 10-minute cab ride from the hotel
The hotel Blue JackTar is part of the Playa Dorada gated complex on the northern shores of Puerto Plata. Playa Dorada beach is the most popular beach in Puerto Plata, and with good reason, with wide, sandy shores and verdant mountainous backdrop. Most of area’s big hotels are clustered in this area, but for those seeking to completely avoid the bustling resort scene, the Blue JackTar is about as low-key as it gets.
The hotel is composed of several clusters of low-rise rooms, apartments and villas, all within walking distance to the private beach. Although none of the rooms have beach views, all have either peaceful garden views or sweeping vistas of the adjacent Robert Trent Jones-designed 18-hole golf course. The hotel underwent a complete renovation in 2012, and some guests say the all-white walls and furniture in many of the rooms feel a bit dated although comfortable.
There are no scheduled activities or organized games here. Instead, guests can choose to lounge by the lagoon-style pool or spend the day at the hotel's private beach. Here, the wide swath of sand is dotted with shaded four-poster beds for luxurious lounging. Since it’s private, there are no interlopers hawking their wares or guests from other resorts. Water sports are available for an additional fee. There’s also a small casino, a gym with all the basics and two tennis courts.
Past guests laud the attentive staff and outstanding food at the hotel’s restaurant Green Jack on TripAdvisor. Unlike the mega-resorts in the Puerto Plata area, there’s only one place to eat on the property, so if you’re looking to explore, downtown Puerto Plata is about a 10-minute cab ride from the hotel.
