Overview

The Academy is a 4-star boutique townhouse complex in London's bustling West End. The 18th-century hotel is made up of five Georgian townhouses in Bloomsbury and "offers a sense of sanctuary just yards from the bustle of Bloomsbury and Oxford Street", says Frommer's.

The hotel is in a great location -- the British Museum, dedicated to human history, art and culture, is less than ten minutes' walk away. Covent Garden is a 15-minute walk away, the shops on Oxford Street are a 14-minute walk away and Bond Street is a 22-minute walk away.

Through twisting corridors and staircases you'll find 49 rooms and suites restored to accentuate their Regency character, some with views over the property's private courtyard gardens. Some of the Junior Suites include marble fireplaces, and all have Nespresso machines. Homely features include a well-stocked library, antique furniture and floral fabrics. The hotel also offers a 24-hour porter service.

Guests can dine in the Alchemy Bar, which serves classic British dishes such as beer-battered fish and chips with mushy peas, as well as international cuisine. You can take afternoon tea in the library or the conservatory.

Note: The hotel will be undergoing refurbishment, public areas, bedrooms and bathrooms will be renovated one townhouse at a time, with minimal disturbance to guests. There will be some scaffolding around the hotel until 30 September.

From the press:

  • "The Academy goes for the country intellectual look, in keeping with Bloomsbury's studious yet decadent history" -- Time Out

  • "A private courtyard garden adds allure to this cosy boutique hotel set in a series of renovated Georgian townhouses in Bloomsbury" -- Zagat

The full breakfast was great, but we had to show our confirmation email to get it - the receptionist was adamant that it was not included. No room upgrade and we were in a very small room. Not allowed to check in early although we did not arrive until 12.15 pm

The staff were friendly and appeared to be helpful but never came up with the right result. I have never seen so many towels in such a small room. All could have been negated if I could have received a bath plug and not a different room with a bath plug! the breakfast was good but hidden downstairs with no fresh air or light. I am sure this will be rectified once building works are complete I would happily stay again but not at my expense

the arrival was exceptional - then it all went down hill. It was never mentioned in my booking that this hotel did not have a lift. We were on the 4th floor - 59 steps - and more to go down to the breakfast room. At midnight after we had just arrived on a late flight from NY I went to have a bath and there was no bath plug. Upon request I was given a new set of towels. There was a language barrier and staff misunderstood the request. I was then told the room next door had a bath plug and we could change rooms. this we did but the room was nowhere near as nice and by then too late to argue. Next morning I asked if we could move back as the room was not very big, the ac did not work, there were power points that did not operate (I had to boil the kettle on the floor on other side of the room) etc. Overall not satisfactory. I was told that the hotel was fully booked so we had to stay where we were. That evening when we returned to our room it had not been made up - at all - and when I spoke to reception another set of towels were delivered. I was told that the house maids had finished for the day and no one could help. I again was not impressed. We were going to the theatre and I asked for the room to be made up whilst i was out. At midnight upon our return I was met with yet another set of towels on the bed. The cupboard was now overflowing with towels and I was beginning to think I was staying at Faulty Towers. This weekend in London was a special weekend for my partner and I and something we had never done before - 2 nights in London over Open House London weekend - and it was an absolute disaster. I was uanbale to get any sense from the staff though everyone was willing, there was someone new at the desk each time we entered the hotel. Overall a very disappointing experience and not the one I had so looked forward to

The hotel was run down, clearly there was no maintenance work done and above all it was dirty. The dust on the stair wells and in the room had been there for several months. Despite a mespresso coffee machine in the room there was no coffee capsules for it. I went to open the draw and the handle came off. Mound in the bathroom. Cracked tiles etc. A dirty iron that left marks on our clothes. Breakfast was very small. It arrived before our coffee. Plates and cups were chipped. There are lots of other things but I won't go on.
