Overview

The Academy is a 4-star boutique townhouse complex in London's bustling West End. The 18th-century hotel is made up of five Georgian townhouses in Bloomsbury and "offers a sense of sanctuary just yards from the bustle of Bloomsbury and Oxford Street", says Frommer's.

The hotel is in a great location -- the British Museum, dedicated to human history, art and culture, is less than ten minutes' walk away. Covent Garden is a 15-minute walk away, the shops on Oxford Street are a 14-minute walk away and Bond Street is a 22-minute walk away.

Through twisting corridors and staircases you'll find 49 rooms and suites restored to accentuate their Regency character, some with views over the property's private courtyard gardens. Some of the Junior Suites include marble fireplaces, and all have Nespresso machines. Homely features include a well-stocked library, antique furniture and floral fabrics. The hotel also offers a 24-hour porter service.

Guests can dine in the Alchemy Bar, which serves classic British dishes such as beer-battered fish and chips with mushy peas, as well as international cuisine. You can take afternoon tea in the library or the conservatory.

Note: The hotel will be undergoing refurbishment, public areas, bedrooms and bathrooms will be renovated one townhouse at a time, with minimal disturbance to guests. There will be some scaffolding around the hotel until 30 September.

From the press:

  • "The Academy goes for the country intellectual look, in keeping with Bloomsbury's studious yet decadent history" -- Time Out

  • "A private courtyard garden adds allure to this cosy boutique hotel set in a series of renovated Georgian townhouses in Bloomsbury" -- Zagat

room not cleaned she when we returned 2.30 2nd day. when asked was seen to promptly but complimentary tea/coffee and toiletries not restocked. had asked in advance for a room with additional power points as daughter has hearing equipment that requires charging overnight but there was only 1x Power socket free in the room! We kindly defined the prosecco as we do not drink. it was mentioned we would be given soft drinks or alternative gesture but none was given. I was too embarrassed to ask again as I had mentioned it again on the 2nd day.

Good location, great rooms and fantastic staff. I stayed in an un renovated room (as they have begun work) it was still very comfortable. The staff were great - especially Sara who made my stay feel like I was coming back to family or friends while still being very professional. For me, this was the best of big hotel while being a small and friendly place. There are two wonderful garden and lounge areas to relax in also.

Room was poor, blind broken, window didn't open, Air Conditioner leaked water on the floor and the wallpaper peeling. Just general poorly maintained.

Nice Hotel which was easily accessible from central London and Euston
Other Comments
If I was to go again, I would request a low room as there was no lift and it was 60+ stairs to our room.
