Overview

Ghyll Manor Hotel & Restaurant is a converted 17th-century timber-framed manor house in Rusper, a small village in West Sussex. It's set in over 40 acres of gardens with a private lake, a terrace with a dais and an old amphitheatre. Inside there is a blend of vintage and contemporary features, such as original beams alongside modern furniture.

Rusper, in the district of Horsham, has a village shop, a park, public tennis courts and two pubs. The countryside location is ideal for walking -- the 150-mile Sussex Border Path runs along Rusper High Street, close to the hotel. Nutbourne Vineyards, Arundel Castle and the National Trust's Wakehurst Place are all within 40 minutes' drive of the hotel.

Brighton, with its famous shopping area The Lanes, the Royal Pavilion and Victorian seafront, is around 40 minutes' drive away, and the cathedral city of Chichester is within an hour's drive.

Guests can have drinks and afternoon tea in the conservatory or the Terrace Room, which has a large patio overlooking the gardens. The AA-Rosette-awarded restaurant serves classic dishes with an unfussy modern twist.

There are 29 rooms, all with free Wi-Fi. Standard and Superior Rooms are in the modern Stable Mews in the grounds.

Note: The hotel is eight miles from Gatwick Airport, so there might be some aircraft noise.

From the press:

  • "A timbered manor house in 40 acres of picture-perfect Sussex countryside, Ghyll Manor is an obvious candidate for a retreat from the city" -- The AA Restaurant Guide 2018

Location.
Other Comments
Rooms tired and need updating. Breakfast was unsatisfactory. Tables not cleared away. Having to wait for cooked breakfast items. Only one young lad serving tables at breakfast with a manager. We had to ask for our tea at breakfast but no cups arrived or cutlery and we had to ask twice again before we got the said items. Very poor service.

Pretty village, pretty building, nice grounds. All very clean and relaxed. Excellent 3 course dinner included in our 'deal'. We enjoyed the arrival Buck's Fizz on the terrace in the sun. The room was spacious and clean with a good bathroom.
Other Comments
These days we normally expect a King size or twin beds rather than a standard double bed. There was air conditioning in the room [July heatwave] and we therefore had to leave our groundfloor windows open; but we were on a cheap deal so these are probably available options. Some diners were overheard complaining about the lamb being undercooked & the veg being Al Dente - We thought both were excellent but for those who prefer their food well cooked it's probably worth telling the chef.

The restaurant was very disorganised especially at breakfast. The evening meal was very poor. I could not eat the main meal. The whole experience I would not like to repeat

Food,atmosphere,old worldly feel.

The older gent serving drinks after dinner was, let's say less than efficient as it took 20minutes + to get a floater coffee which came out as just a black coffee..other than that we enjoyed our stay

Friendliness of the waiting staff

The cost of £10 corkage to hire an ice bucket I thought was a bit excessive, my bottle of bubbles to celebrate my friend’s 70 birthday only cost £7.99. We opted to drink it as it was!
