This South Seas-themed resort opened 45 years ago as one of Disney World’s original hotels but completed renovations last year and still rakes in accolades as one of the top properties for those visiting “The Most Wonderful Place on Earth.” In 2015, the property was named one of Conde Nast Traveler Reader’s Choice Awards “Top Resorts in Florida” as well as Travel + Leisure’s “World’s Best Family Resorts.”

New additions to the 25-acre property include a volcano pool with 140-foot waterslide and a revamped lobby and three-story atrium. Koi ponds are scattered between thickets of palm trees and hammocks support napping guests along the torch-lit walkways connecting the thatched roofed buildings. Cinderella’s Castle is visible from the lake’s beach and is the perfect place for guests to watch the nightly Electric Water Pageant sail past the grounds.

In the evenings, hula dancers perform at luaus alongside fire dancers and a buffet dinner. Visitors can rub shoulders with Mickey and the gang at a character breakfast and fill up any time of day at one of the property’s many restaurants. The resort offers a supervised kids’ club and free outdoor movie screenings. The hotel has two pools, an outdoor lounge and bar offering poolside service and a spa. Visitors can rent boats, roast marshmallows at the campfire, fish on a catch-and-release excursion or work up a sweat on one of the property’s sport courts.

Accommodations are laid out in two- and three-story longhouses, each named for a tropical island in the South Pacific. Access to the concierge lounge is available only to visitors staying in Hawaii or Tonga, including complimentary refreshments. The recent renovations added 20 bungalows balancing on stilts above the lagoon and offering incredible views of the Magic Kingdom. Even standard rooms at this family-friendly resort comfortably accommodate five guests and feature free Wi-Fi, flat-screen televisions and coffeemakers.

Located on the monorail, the property is just two stop from the Magic Kingdom and six stops from Epcot Center. The property also offers free water taxis and busses to the theme parks as well as roundtrip airport transportation.
