Nearly a century after opening, two Victorian-era hotels merged to create the Horton Grand Hotel in the mid-1980s. Saved from demolition then carefully taken apart, transported and reconstructed side by side, the hotel now sits in San Diego's liveliest neighborhood, steps to the San Diego Chinese Historical Museum and multitude of lounges, restaurants, boutiques and attractions.
"This unique Gaslamp Quarter property is a historical bonanza," writes Frommer's. The two elegantly restored buildings -- now connected via a light-filled atrium and New-Orleans style courtyard -- feature handcrafted antiques, elegant period decor and a 200-year-old hand-carved oak grand staircase. Marble fireplaces and wrought-iron balconies characterize many of the charming guest rooms -- each with unique decor -- at the hotel, complemented by modern amenities such as free Wi-Fi.
Off the lobby, grab a drink or a bite at the Palace Bar which transports guests back in time with wood-paneled walls, elegant decor, a cozy atmosphere and live entertainment Thursday-Saturday evenings. Ida Bailey's Restaurant is open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and there's also a 24-hour on-site gift shop is perfect for late-night snackers and forgetful packers.

I wish I had known it was across from a nightclub. It got loud in the middle of the night.

the Salt & Whiskey was nice and the room was big, although with a non-functional sofabed which was disappointing and the hotel staff said there was nothing they could do. I do think that there should be something provided by way of a credit for the inconveniences and not getting entirely what I was led to believe in the price. I also asked about the $10.00 parking credit and whether that could be used for something else and they said no. I so know that larger hotels such as the Fairmont, Four Seasons, etc. would give something so that the customer comes back, but Horton Grand made no effort.

The woman at the front desk was not knowledgable at all and made up things as she went along. We had booked a taxi for the airport the night before our departure and we were assured that it would be there at 3:30AM, only to find there was not there. We had to order one again and were late for the airport. When we asked that one be called, the woman was rude. I also asked for a printout of my statement and she said that the computer is starting up and that was started at 3:00AM and she could not do anything about it but send a copy via email. I went into my email last night and it was not there. I therefore called the hotel to request it and the front desk (male) was not friendly about it. I find this very frustrating and disappointing.
Also, the sofa bed was broken and we were told that is all they could do. We also asked for light bulbs to be replaced as not all the lights in the room were functional. They only replaced one!!
The room itself was very large and pleasant, but it did not matter where you were in the hotel, it is very noisy with homeless people yelling and screaming all night and there is a bar within a few feet from the hotel. When we asked for the $30.00 credit at the Salt & Whiskey and when I presented the coupon, the bartender said that it wasn't applicable to the whiskey that was purchased and then when he saw that I was about to argue the point, he said it was fine.
I also found that the bathrobes had a strong dryer sheet scent to it, which made me believe that the laundry was done at home. Also, the light blanket on the bedding had little holes in it.
Overall, it is not a disireable location, but the hotel itself is very unique and nice in appearance.

I rated high but I did experience sone issues. Arrived around 7pm after longet than expected journey. Looking forward to dinner using $30 credit, only to find out upon arrival there was a private party going on in the only restaurant in the hotel. I had to go outside of hotel to eat and it was pouring rain. Very disappointed by the inconvenience but they did credit my bill $30. The room they assigned ended up right over the party, which was very loud. Not well planned on their part. Asked for another room which they accommodated. Room was nice and comfy but the fireplace didnt work.

While this is a great hotel with an amazing location, you should know that the valet is $45 a night which isn’t advertised anywhere and the first time you are notified is when you show up for your stay.

The staff at the hotel did not go above and beyond to assure we enjoyed our stay they were polite but non engaging. No extras here! We forgot toothpaste and were directed to the gift shop where we could BUY it. This would be ok but you can’t gauge people on stuff like parking (45$/night) and then not have something as simple as toiletries.

It is a very cool hotel. The parking staff were great. The price was very good. The checkout staff was fine. The breakfast buffet looked great and was only $12. It was too bad that a couple of poor personalities were able to sour what should have been a great stay.

The staff at check in were very rude. They were badmouthing a guest that had been calling down to them while we were checking in, right in front of us. I specifically requested two beds when I booked with Travelzoo, since I was sharing the room with my uncle. The room had one bed and the same staff member made zero attempt to help when I called down and explained the situation. This didn't surprise me too much, considering how they were treating the other guest while we were checking in. They were also filming something in the bar, which is fine, but we were trying to get downstairs and outside and found ourselves in the middle of a film set. Apparently there were a couple of small, taped up signs, but they were not very noticeable. I recommend roping off the area to keep people out, not little paper signs.

Request a room away from the nightclub across the street. Probably wouldn't have enjoyed it as much if we were near that as it stays open until 5am. Others complained about the constant beat being heard/felt from there, but it was New Year's Eve, so that may have played a roll in the sound problem too.

The staff was amazing. Flawless check in. I felt welcomed immediately upon walking in the door. Room service was prompt and courteous. Check out was flawless and I was even set up with a driver back to the airport at 4:30am, which meant more than words can express due to traveling alone. That to me was above and beyond and demonstrated that they truly cared about me, my stay, and my safety.
