Why We Love This Hotel

  • The hotel is in a wooded valley in an area that has red deer, wild ponies and even an extinct volcano
  • William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge both lived nearby and were inspired by the landscape surrounding the hotel
  • Dunster Castle and Exmoor National Park are both less than 30 minutes' drive away
  • The Grade I-listed ruins of Glastonbury Abbey, and Tiverton Castle, a 17th-century country house, are less than an hour away by car

Combe House Hotel is a privately owned country house hotel in Somerset's Quantock Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Hidden away in a wooded valley, this boutique property has 17 individually styled bedrooms and a cosy cottage feel.

Located in the village of Holford, the hotel is around 30 minutes' drive from Taunton, Bridgwater and Minehead. Dunster Castle, a former motte and bailey castle that's now a grand country house, and Exmoor National Park are also half an hour's drive away, while Tiverton Castle, Glastonbury Abbey and the seaside town of Weston-super-Mare are within an hour's drive.

Wookey Hole Caves -- an extensive network of limestone caves that is noted for the legend of the Witch of Wookey Hole -- is just over an hour's drive away.

The Woodland Hill circular walk passes right by the hotel. It will take you through open heathland and offers impressive views of the Somerset Levels, the Mendip Hills, the Bristol Channel and the Brecon Beacons.

The on-site restaurant and bar use produce from local suppliers, from Somerset cider to artisan cheese.

Superior Rooms are more spacious than Classic Rooms and have garden views. Wi-Fi is free in public areas or you can pay £2.50 per day for in-room access.

booking stated full english but hotel said all things cooked extra money required. hotel rated continental breakfast as luxury but 2/3 choice of cereal and bread plus fuit and jams with ham&cheese not my idea of luxury. not a pan o raisin or crossaint in sight.
Other Comments
staff very pleasant, did not see owners at all maybe not there but i would have expected someone to be doing the rounds among residents to see if all is well in a hotel of this size

It was just a short visit of two nights deal price visit, and friends were near-by. The room was comfortable and well equipped and our Full English Breakfast, included in the price was superb. It was a bit disconcerting to see a price list for each item on our table but put this down to the fact they will serve breakfast to non-residents. The dinner menu was too fussy for us. nothing was served as it is and most items were stuffed. (they didn't say 'Farcis, thankfully). an example was the pork loin was 'stuffed' with Pancetta and Spinach, and other items were similar; so we ate The Plough, on the corner of the road into the hotel. There is a slight snobby attitude from the management, which didn't help the atmosphere.

Breakffast Breakfast was good.

room was pokey and subject to disturbance from neighbours - could hear next room speaking through walls of bedroom and bathroom combined. Breakfast and dinner seating penalises couples in favour of groups. Food was pricey and poorly cooked and rushed despite prior request to pace service.

Being refused a cooked breakfast when it was part of the Travelzoo offer, saying we were supposed to say we were using Travelzoo, despite having booked in and stating we were on a Travelzoo Deal. The ensuite was like a broom cupboard and the Manageress was unpleasant to us and made no apology

This is a lovely hotel in a beautiful area. We have stayed here before with a Travelzoo deal and had a lovely room overlooking gardens at front of hotel. However, this time we were given a room at the back which had no outlook but straight onto service area and shaded by the woods directly in front of our window. We brought this to the attention of the hotel but were advised we would have to pay extra £35 to be moved to a better room, which we declined. Our room was very comfortable, and apart from that we did enjoy our stay and would probably return in future if a deal was available.
