The Laura Ashley Hotel The Belsfield overlooks Lake Windermere in the popular Lakeland town of Bowness-on-Windermere. It was built in 1845 for a European aristocrat and is now part of the Laura Ashley Hotels group. Expect elegant furnishings, lush fabrics, grand chandeliers and classic designs combined with modern features such as a glass reception area.

There are two restaurants, both serving traditional British dishes: the Belsfield Restaurant, which has views of Lake Windermere, and the Brasserie. There's also an extensive wine list with wines hand-picked by the hotel's buying experts. Guests can have drinks in the Lounge Bar and Drawing Room.

The hotel has 62 bedrooms, each with underfloor heating in the bathrooms, luxury pillows, Egyptian cotton linens and a jar of local sweets. All rooms have free Wi-Fi, and most have views of Lake Windermere.

There's plenty to do in Bowness-on-Windermere. The World of Beatrix Potter Attraction is a 5-minute walk from the hotel, and there are numerous shops, cafes and restaurants in the town centre. Bowness Pier, which is opposite the hotel, is the starting point for cruises to Lakeside or Ambleside.

Hawkshead and Grasmere are both 25 minutes' drive. Car-free Hawkshead is particularly special -- it's described by Lonely Planet as "a jumble of whitewashed cottages, cobbled lanes and old pubs", and was where poet William Wordsworth went to school.

Note: The swimming pool is closed until further notice.

The only minor problem is we found the hotel heating to high, which made it difficult to sleep

I enjoyed our stay though I did feel that as we'd booked using a deal our room was perhaps a budget room, it certainly felt that way, given it was off along a corridor and not in the main building. Quite a small room.

Very welcoming hotel, beautifully decorated and furnished. We had a garden view room which also had a super view of the lake. Food in the Brasserie was very good. Nice location within walking distance of the centre. Very relaxing break

We checked in at 4.45pm and told we had arrived too late for our cream tea & prosecco, advised we could have it the next day after 12 but that meant hanging around after check out. It should have been clear on the paperwork that it was only available during certain times.
