The elegant Hotel Viking is set in the upscale town of Newport, an area known for its aristocrat residents and the houses they built. Dating back to 1926, the hotel was named in tribute to the area’s original Scandinavian settlers and is as much of an institution in the seaside town as its neighboring mansions. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and has hosted notable American “royalty,” including the Vanderbilts, Kennedys and Astors.
With a location right on famed Bellevue Avenue in Newport’s Historic District, the hotel puts visitors within a five-minute walk of the Newport waterfront, shops and restaurants. The scenic mansion Cliff Walk trail is a five-minute drive or 30-minute walk away.
The brick, Georgian Colonial holds fast to the bygone era of the Gilded Age, reflected by the décor. Rooms are furnished with period-inspired furniture, built-in cherry wardrobes and rich fabrics. The marble bathrooms were recently renovated and have a rain showerhead and terrycloth robes. Suites are good for families, with pull-out sofas and separate living rooms. Pets under 75 lbs. are welcomed with a bottomless bag of treats.
Travelers can start the day with breakfast on the patio and enjoy a swim at the indoor heated pool. The on-site SpaTerre was rated one of the Top 75 Hotel Spas in the U.S. in 2012 by Condé Nast Traveler and has a wide range of facials and massages to enjoy. For an upscale meal, look no further than the hotel’s own One Bellevue, for lunch or dinner. Afternoon tea is also available. After dinner, head to the Top of Newport Bar to experience harbor views, refreshing cocktails and chilled oysters (among other nibbles).
