Why We Love This Hotel

  • Ardanaiseig Hotel is in The Independent's 50 Best British Hotels
  • It was named Country House Hotel of the Year at the 2015 Scottish Hotel Awards
  • The restaurant has 2 AA Rosettes
  • Red Magazine has selected it as one of the best rural retreats in the UK
  • The hotel is in 240 acres of secluded grounds on the banks of Loch Awe

Ardanaiseig Hotel is a secluded Baronial mansion that's accessed via a 3.8-mile single track from Kilchrenan, 22 miles from Oban. Considering the hotel sits on the banks of Loch Awe and at the foot of Ben Cruachan Mountain, it's no surprise it was named Regional Winner of the Romantic Hotel of the Year for Argyll and Lomond at the Scottish Hotel Awards 2015.

With open fireplaces, Victorian furniture and a grand piano, the hotel retains its roots as a private country house. There are wellington boots by the front door that guests can borrow to explore the numerous walking paths around Loch Awe and in the 240 acres of woodlands.

The 2-AA-Rosette restaurant offers à la carte dining and a tasting menu, and light lunch and afternoon tea are served in the library from 12-5pm. Public rooms include the library bar and the drawing room, with large sofas and a bay window.

Each bedroom has its own character, and is furnished with antique pieces, plush fabrics and grand paintings. The Scottish Hotel Awards says the bedrooms "exude romance, luxury and intimacy". Some of the Garden View rooms have direct access to the garden and all rooms have free Wi-Fi.

Kilchurn Castle, which Lonely Planet calls "one of Scotland's finest settings", is on the north shore of Loch Awe. You can climb the 15th-century castle tower, which sits on a small peninsula on the loch, or if you're feeling energetic, you can try climbing Ben Cruachan Mountain starting at the Falls of Cruachan Railway Station, a 30-minute drive from Ardanaiseig Hotel.

Take a day trip to the Isle of Mull in the Inner Hebrides, an island with 300 miles of coastline -- you can drive to Oban and take a 45-minute ferry crossing to Craignure.

Argyll Adventure is ideal for a family day out. It's about an hour's drive from the hotel, and has activities including paintballing, horse riding, Laser Blast, rock climbing and a bouncy castle.

Dogs are welcome at the hotel and are £20 per animal, per night.
