Icelandair Hotel Klaustur
Why We Love This Hotel
- Located between 2 glaciers in southern Iceland, near the Sister’s Falls
- Good-size bedrooms with free Wi-Fi, and an optional Northern Lights wake-up service
- The restaurant serves local fare including Klaustur Arctic char (trout)
Located between two glaciers in the south of the country, Icelandair Hotel Klaustur is in an ideal location for visits to the southeastern coast, the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon or the Skaftafell ice cave.
It's an excellent spot for hikers, with the impressive Systrafoss (the Sisters' Waterfall) a short walk away. If you're feeling strenuous, climb to the top of the Klausturfjall mountain and the lake, which feeds the falls below. Further afield, the the Fjaõrárgljúfur canyon is a 15-minute drive.
The hotel is set over two floors and has a simple décor. The bedrooms are adequately sized and Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel. Upgrade to a Junior Suite for a separate lounge area, a bathtub and shower in the bathroom, and tea and coffee-making facilities. Reception runs a very handy Northern Lights call list on request.
In the morning, a buffet breakfast with cereals, fruit, bread, chocolate croissants, Skyr (Icelandic yoghurt) and stewed rhubarb is available. The restaurant is also open for lunch and dinner, and offers homemade sourdough bread, lobster soup and Klaustur Arctic char (claimed to be some of the best trout available), which comes from the water under the Skaftáreldahraun lava field. Also worth a mention is the Fire and Ice dessert, a sweet and sour fruit soup made from local rhubarb and served with vanilla ice cream.
