Hipping Hall dates back to the 15th century, when it was used as a blacksmith's, and is named after the stepping (or "hipping") stones over the stream by the old washhouse. These days the property comprises a cluster of lovingly restored ivy-clad stone buildings set in 10 acres of grounds.

The real draw of this restaurant with rooms is the food. The smart, airy restaurant is a 15th-century hall complete with a beautifully lit beamed ceiling and a minstrels' gallery -- "a gem" according to The Good Hotel Guide 2017. This historic space is an atmospheric setting in which to enjoy the contemporary menu, which features fine-dining dishes inspired by Lancashire and the surrounding counties of Cumbria and Yorkshire.

Awarded three AA Rosettes, the restaurant is listed in The Michelin Guide 2018, which praises the "creative original dishes". The Daily Telegraph says "nothing we ate was short of divine".

The AA praises the "spacious bedrooms"; there are seven upstairs in the main house, three more in an adjoining outbuilding and a further five in the newly refurbished Old Stables building. The décor is inspired by the colours and textures of the local countryside, with cosy deep-pile carpets and modern bathrooms using natural stone, slate and limestone, with deep double-ended baths and underfloor heating. Wi-Fi is only available in the lounge.

Set between the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales, there is ample countryside to explore, and the property offers easy access to the Howgill Fells, which has top-notch walking routes. The property is in Cowan Bridge, around five minutes' drive from the Cumbrian town of Kirkby Lonsdale, where you will find a host of shops and tea rooms. The Ingleton waterfalls and caves are less than 10 minutes' drive, and the South Lakes are around 30 minutes' drive away.

We thought the 5 accompanying wines with the tasting menu were very average..wouldn’t bother again. But apart from that we loved it and will be back!

could have had good potential but thanks to our disappointment and the dismissive attittude when we asked for guidance about where to eat we felt they did not care about their gueste as long as they got their money which unusally had been charged to my credit card over thre weeks before we arrived. The first time Travelzoo has let us down

discrepency between offer/hype and fact. 1,ofered cosy room in house but had room outside in stable. this room was probaly a better room but we had to walk inthe rain for breakfast. we looked forward to the "wonderful" cuisine but discovered on our arrival the restaurant was closed the two nights we were there. Our reception was brusque being told we could look for a cafe locally. It is a cold November and we do not know the area, searching for somewhere to eat in the dark is no pleasure.
