"Gorgeous inside and out" -- BlackBook

Why We Love It

  • A regal 1903 Beaux-Arts building with bay windows
  • Refurbished, clubby library with marble fireplace and wood paneling
  • On a quiet side street less than two blocks from Times Square, between 5th and 6th Avenues
  • A neighborhood full of similarly handsome landmarks, like Grand Central Terminal and New York Public Library

Overview

Just east of Times Square is a neighborhood full of turn-of-the-century landmarks. The main branch of the New York Public Library is a colonnaded Beaux-Arts beauty with leafy Bryant Park as its backyard. A few blocks away rise the soaring arches and pediments of Grand Central Terminal, right next to the silvery deco of the Chrysler Building. Within four blocks of all of this is the quiet, cozy Mansfield Hotel, a handsome building from 1903 that steeps history through its hallways and lobby.

One of the hotel's most famous guests was Max von Gerlach, a flamboyant socialite who may have been the inspiration for the Great Gatsby. The lobby certainly seems fit for a baron, with a clubby parlor covered in honey-colored wood, with stocked bookshelves, leather armchairs pulled around classic table games, and a gray marble fireplace.

History also means historical proportions, so hallways are on the narrow side and rooms are compact -- the petite room lives up to its name -- but they are clean and comfortable. Wi-Fi is complimentary in the lobby, club room and M Bar.

Times Square and Broadway theaters are less than two blocks west. Just around the corner to the east starts the most popular stretch of Fifth Avenue shopping.

From the press:
  • "Small, exquisitely appointed, copper façade, meticulous old-time craftsmanship. Gorgeous inside and out" -- BlackBook
  • "One of the nicest little hotels in the city, the Mansfield manages to be both grand and intimate" -- Rough Guide

We stayed five nights/six days at hotel, booked via Travelzoo. The hotel facilities are as old as building: 1) Room temperature is as per outside. No heating when it is 50F. (We had to wear layers inside the room.) When it is hot, we tried to turn on air conditioner but the machine was so noisy that we gave up on it. 2) The portable heater they brought us broke down after 15 minutes of use. It also broke the fuse, i.e., we had a blackout/power outage. 3) Thanks to #2 above, we were afraid to use electricity/sockets in the room as we were concerned about fire safety. 4). Windows were not soundproof. Hence we could not sleep at night with all the noise and construction work outside (even with earplugs on.) 5) Forget about wifi in room. Many guests huddled at the lobby to get wifi. Feels like we are in historical times. I would definitely not put this hotel on your recommended list. If you do, please highlight the "old" aspects of the facility and or propose it to members who want a "totally unplugged stay/smartphone detox stay" or a stay during good weather days.

Location was great

The room had very rough hardwood floor in desperate need of refinishing. The blinds had to be opened and closed manually, they were broken. We were given a second floor street side room which was incredibly noisy. Also, a large metal grate fell out of the wall and woke us during the night. I have photos. The continental breakfast was not all what was represented in the photos. This property should not have been represented as it was by Travelzoo.

Loved that they kept the original staircase after the restorations. Beautiful and clean.

None. This hotel reflects badly on Travelzoo. We are first time Travelzoo users. Not good.

The building is over 100 years old and I love that ‘old New York charm’. Rooms are clean & comfortable.

Normally an upgrade would be great if the room was nice. Staff was nice though.
Other Comments
The room was upgraded to junior suite which was nice, however the state of the room was in such disrepair that I cant imagine was a normal double would look like. Room looked like it hadn't been renovated since the 80s. Or cleaned. Carpet was old. Would not sit on the couch in the sitting room as it looked like a couch from the basement of a frat house; as worn in and questionably stained. Was really disappointed in the price for this space.
