Why We Love This Hotel

  • The AA says The Royal & Fortescue is a "friendly and convivial hotel... conveniently located in the centre of town", with bedrooms of a "consistently high standard"
  • Facilities include a restaurant, a cosy coffee house and a sleek cocktail bar
  • It's in a great spot for visiting the historic country house Arlington Court or the quirky Broomhill Sculpture Gardens -- both are less than 25 minutes away by car
  • The popular beaches of Woolacombe, Croyde and Saunton Sands are around 30 minutes' drive away

Overview

A Georgian former coaching inn incorporating older buildings, The Royal & Fortescue is now an elegant hotel situated at the head of Barnstaple's historic high street.

The property is in a great spot for exploring North Devon, with the sandy beaches of Saunton Sands, Woolacombe and Croyde all around half an hour away by car. The pretty villages of Bideford and Ilfracombe, with their plentiful shops and tea rooms, are around 30 minutes' drive away, while Barnstaple's boutiques, Victorian pannier market and theatre are a short stroll from the hotel.

Walkers will be spoilt for choice. The Tarka Trail passes through Barnstaple and runs 180 miles through North Devon, including a 32-mile section along a disused railway line from Braunton to Meeth. Braunton is also a springboard for some pretty coastal trails. Exmoor National Park is around 25 minutes away by car, and is home to free-roaming red deer and ponies.

Guests can eat in the lively bistro, 62 The Bank, which uses locally sourced ingredients. The hotel also has a sleek cocktail bar for pre- or post-dinner drinks, and a coffee house serving homemade cakes and Devonshire clotted cream teas.

Steeped in history, the hotel has plenty of character -- be sure to check out the Jacobean ceiling in the bistro, which dates back to 1620. There are 49 recently refurbished bedrooms, decorated in a contemporary style, which come with free Wi-Fi, LCD TVs with Freeview, and tea- and coffee-making facilities.

Ideally situated within walking distance of town and river. Lovely hotel. Great self service breakfast with plenty of attentive staff to serve drinks and toast. Very professional and friendly staff. A great Travel Zoo deal. Would visit again.
Other Comments
Parking is limited but if you arrive about 1.00pm there should be spaces. The open car park is best as the garage parking is quite tight. Bedrooms to the side & rear don't have a view but ours was spacious. (Room 208 on the second floor). There is a lift.

Location is good, right in the centre of Barnstaple. In all areas lighting is excellent and as with all Brend Hotels it is pristine in appearance.
Other Comments
Our room was tiny. We stayed only two nights so had small suitcases, even then moving around was difficult.

The staff - every member from reception to restaurant to bar - everyone very helpful and friendly. Location good for visiting North Devon.
Other Comments
We had to change room, as the shower stopped working but this was organised immediately and without fuss. Some rooms at the side of the hotel had noise from air conditioning units attached to the kitchens. Our second room faced the front and was fine. Restaurant food delicious.

The lounge and bistro and cocktail bar
Other Comments
The bed in our room was uncomfortable. We were given a double bed and the mattress was lumpy with broken springs!
