Why We Love This Hotel

  • The restaurant and bar has a log fire and views across the Calder Valley
  • The market town of Sowerby Bridge on the River Calder is a 20-minute walk from the hotel
  • The hotel is less than an hour's drive from the Peak District National Park
  • Halifax and Shibden Hall, which is the former home of Anne Lister and featured in the BBC's "Gentleman Jack", are around 15 minutes' drive away

The New Hobbit is a traditional country inn with views across the Calder Valley. Built in the early 1900s as a pub, it's now a restaurant and inn with contemporary and vintage-styled rooms. The cosy, family-friendly restaurant is an ideal spot to take in the views while staying warm by the log fire.

The West Yorkshire mill town of Sowerby Bridge, known for its picturesque waterways (the River Calder, River Ryburn and Rochdale Canal all run through the town) lined with trendy pubs and cafés, is 20 minutes' walk from the hotel, or less than five minutes' drive. Just outside Sowerby Bridge is Mill Bank Village, which has a gold award from Yorkshire in Bloom. Once home to seven cotton, silk and wool mills, Mill Bank is now a conservation area popular with ramblers.

Halifax is arond 15 minutes' drive away -- feast your way round the Grade II-listed Victorian food market or visit 15th-century Halifax Minster and admire the remaining medieval stained-glass windows. Shibden Hall, a Grade II-listed historic house set in 32 hectares of gardens and woodlands, is just ouside Halifax. The former home of landowner and diarist Anne Lister, it recently featured in "Gentleman Jack", the BBC drama series about her life.

Arrived for a couple of days break. Were greeted by road closed signs at the top of Hob Lane but they had been badly placed - the problem was downhill of the hotel. There was an easy way around anyway. Check-in was easy and the newer annex was clean and comfortable. Could pick out a few small things - light over wet flight of outside steps to lower car park not working and potentially hazardous, the emergency overnight number for hotel was written on a laminate in erasable ink and had, in fact, been partially erased - but these were small quibbles compared to the standard of decor and price paid. Breakfast and evening starter were average but mains were very tasty. Bar prices not too extreme either. Would certainly revisit if back in the area,

On the whole very good but some issues let it down

Room in the annexe with balcony was excellent but listening to others, it would appear that the rooms in the main building are dated. On the whole it was a very enjoyable visit, the room was very good, the breakfast was very good and the meal in the restaurant was superb. However, a few small thing let the Hobbit down: my partner on day one said someone had been sick in the ladies but on day two it was still there - evidently not cleaned. We had a meal in the restaurant on the second night and the belly pork was excellent but after waiting twenty minutes had to go and find a member of staff to clear our plates and take our dessert order - to be fair though we were given free dessert as compensation. Petty I know but there was also cobwebs on the wall behind table five and all tables had tea light:candle holders but none were replaced or lit. Having said that, it was mainly excellent and staff (although limited at time’s) were extremely helpful - would definitely return lovely views as well

Lovely place with beautiful clean room and comfortable bed. Super sized walk in shower. The food served was great and excellent value for money. The breakfast was fab - hot and lots to choose from. No issues at all, but would recommend the younger staff could do with a little bit more training. The road closed sign sent us on a diversion that wasn't required as there was access but Highways didn't provide a sign for that! Would return and recommend. Thank You

The room was clean but small and very, very dark. Like sleeping in a cupboard. Room 25 so avoid if you are claustraphobic. Only 1 chair in double room. Breakfast on the first day was like Fawlty Towers. Waitress was pleasant but her priority was cleaning tables rather than taking orders. Long wait. People at other tables were remarking on this as well. Staff training needed.

Unfortunately we were unable to travel. The region was hit by storm Ciara and as we were travelling by rail we had to take note of advice from the met office and rail companies not to travel. I hoped due to the circumstances we could have been offered an alternative date, but when I rang the Hobbit this was not offered.
