Situated between the Lake District and Yorkshire Dates national parks, and the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the Royal Oak Appleby is a traditional pub with rooms within easy reach of some of Britain's most spectacular countryside. This cosy lodging occupies an 18th-century coaching inn next to the River Eden, and is within a 10-minute walk of both Appleby town centre and Appleby Castle, known for its 12th-century keep, and 10 minutes' drive from Eden Valley Railway.

Kirkland, the starting point for walks to the summit of Cross Fell, the highest Pennine peak, is a 20-minute drive away. Borger Dalr walk, described by Alfred Wainwright as the "finest square mile" in the Lake District, is 45 minutes' drive away, while Windermere is around an hour from the hotel by car.

Beamed ceilings, wood panelling and exposed stone walls characterise Royal Oak Appleby's interiors. Guests can order a 3-course dinner in the elegant dining area, the lounge with its log fire, or the taproom, which also serves local ale and offers big-screen sports and a patio area.

The 10 guestrooms feature rustic-style décor -- some have period features -- and come with free Wi-Fi, TVs, and tea- and coffee-making facilities. Premier rooms have upgraded hospitality trays and bathrobes, and some include mini bars, bathtubs and safes.
