Why We Love It

  • Waterhead Hotel's gardens slope down to the shores of Coniston Water -- "a quiet beauty that sets it apart from the more popular destinations", says Rough Guides
  • The traditional Lakeland village of Coniston is a 10-minute walk away
  • Brantwood -- the former home of writer John Ruskin -- is around five minutes' drive away

Waterhead Hotel sits in gardens on the edge of Coniston Water and boasts panoramic views of the Coniston Fells, making it a great base from which to explore the local area. You can take to the trails, or hop on a launch for a lake cruise.

Coniston's copper-mining past is evident in the remains of shafts and mines dotted around the area, but it also has a strong cultural heritage. Writer John Ruskin lived in Coniston, Tennyson honeymooned in the village and Turner painted the mountainous scenery. Author Arthur Ransome also holidayed as a child in Coniston, and used the area as the setting for his Swallows and Amazons book series.

The hotel is around 10 minutes' walk from Coniston Village, where you can visit the Ruskin Museum or see Hoathwaite Farmhouse, a 400-year-old Grade II-listed property that was recently restored by The National Trust. Tarn Hows -- part of an estate once owned by Beatrix Potter -- is a 40-minute walk away. Windermere is a 30-minute drive from the hotel.

You can begin the day with a full Cumbrian breakfast at the hotel restaurant, which serves local produce and has views of the Old Man of Coniston, a fell that's over 2000 feet high. There is also a Lounge Bar that stocks local ales.

The lounge is comfortable with Lakeside views. The dining room is adequately furnished but no 'wow' factor. The cooked breakfast was good as was the table d'hôtel dinner. For the cost it was ok.
Other Comments
The Waterhead Hotel is generally a bit jaded. For exale dead flowers on the reception desk.It could do with a good, thorough clean. Our room 11 had dusty skirting boards, the bathroom floor needed a good scrub. The room was functional but only for sleeping. It had a skylight, no window and 1 easy chair. It is obviously run on a tight budget, it could be so much better.

Other Comments
The accommodation we were given was in the 'annex'. Access to it was through a 'back yard' not very inviting. Two windows in the lounge area one directly overlooking the road and delivery area the other was painted over so no view! Had to keep bedroom curtains closed - no privacy. Bathroom needed attention - loose floor tiles and shower screen stopped short of bath so that when you had a shower the water just went out onto the bathroom floor. Tried to book table in restaurant for the second night but was told it was booked up but there were places in the village!. First time I've been resident in a hotel and not been able to use restaurant - thought this was quite bad.
