About the itinerary

Days 1-3: You'll fly out of Sydney bound for the irrepressible New York City, where you'll spend three nights at the 4-star Millennium Hilton New York One UN Plaza. While in NYC, you can experience the bright lights of Times Square, catch a Broadway show, stroll through Central Park, or visit the Statue of Liberty.

Days 4-6: Get ready to set sail! You'll board the Volendam this afternoon for your 30-day Amazon Explorer cruise. You'll spend the first two days at sea.

Days 7-9: Discover the beauty of Fort Lauderdale today. Join an onshore excursion and discover the Everglades, a unique and expansive wetland ecosystem and UNESCO World Heritage Site. You'll spend the following day at sea.

Day 10: Today, you'll sail into Philipsburg in St. Maarten. While here, you could ride the Soualiga Sky Explorer chairlift, hike Mount Concordia, or join a cycling tour to explore the island's breathtaking beauty.

Day 11: Castries is the capital and commercial centre of the island of St Lucia and boasts dramatic landscapes moulded by ancient volcanos and sun-filled palm-fringed beaches. While here, you could glide through the rainforest on an aerial tram, snorkel in Marine Park, or kayak in the waters of Pigeon Island.

Day 12-13: Bridgetown, the enchanting capital of Barbados, offers a blend of historical colonial charm, vibrant local customs, and pristine white sandy beaches. The cityscape combines grand colonial architecture, charming wooden houses, bustling street markets, and seafront cafes, serving the day's freshest catches. While here, you could ride an electric tram into Harrison Cave, look for green monkeys in the Barbados Wildlife Reserve or relax at the Copacabana Beach Bar. The following day, you'll be at sea.

Day 14: Devil's Island, located off the coast of French Guiana, is a hauntingly beautiful destination with a dark history. You can explore the abandoned prison buildings, take a boat tour around the islands, and hike through the lush jungle, all while soaking up the stunning ocean views.

Days 15-16: You'll spend these days sailing through the Barra Norte Sea, crossing the Amazon River Bar, sailing the Barra Norte River, and cruising on to the mighty Amazon River.

Day 16: Macapá's history is visible in its well-preserved sites from the early 18th century, such as the Fortaleza de São José, a significant colonial structure. Accessible only by boat or plane, Macapá is home to diverse bird species and serves as a sanctuary for migrating birds, including flamingos and ibises, in its lush wetlands.

Day 17: You'll spend today cruising the Amazon River and crossing the Equator.

Day 18: Santarem is a bustling trading centre in the Amazon, known for its rich natural beauty and legendary tales. Highlights in the city include admiring the unique 'meeting of the waters' where the clear, green Tapajós River merges with the muddy Amazon River, hiking the Tapajós National Forest and visiting the historic Casa da Farinha.

Day 19: The remote Indian Village of Boca Da Valeria offers a glimpse into the authentic river life of the Amerindians. Less than 100 residents live in grass huts and sustain themselves through hunting and fishing. Perched on a hill overlooking the Amazon, the village has little tourism infrastructure but still attracts visitors seeking an insight into traditional Amerindian ways.

Day 20-21: Known as the 'Paris of the Jungle,' Manaus, the capital of Brazil's Amazonas state, is a vibrant destination blending culture, art, dining, and nature. With its location on the left bank of the Rio Negro, visitors can explore the Rubber Museum, cruise Lake January to see the giant Victoria water lilies, interact with Pink Dolphins in Acajatuba, and visit the Military Zoo and encounter endangered animals.

Day 22: Parintins is an isolated island town in the Amazon River that boasts rich biodiversity and the annual 'Boi Bumba' festival celebrations, which highlight cultural diversity. Join an onshore excursion to learn and experience the magic of this festival.

Day 23: Alter do Chão, a picturesque riverside village on Rio Tapajos, features charming cottages by white sand beaches dotted with palm trees, including the popular Ilha do Amor. Visitors can explore Lago Verde by renting canoes, take scenic boat tours along Rio Tapajós or the Amazon to observe diverse bird species and possible wildlife sightings, and enjoy a short but stunning hike at Serra Pelada.

Days 24-29: These days will be spent at sea. You'll again cross the Equator and cruise the Amazon and the Barra Norte Rivers en route to Trinidad and Tobago.

Day 30: The bustling capital of Trinidad and Tobago, Port of Spain, is a vibrant city known for its diverse culture, lively festivals, and delicious cuisine. Visitors can explore the Queen's Park Savannah, visit the iconic Brian Lara Promenade for shopping and dining, and experience the vibrant markets and street food scene at the bustling Chaguanas Market. The following day, you'll spend the day at sea.

Day 31: In Willemstad, Curacao's capital, discover a vibrant UNESCO World Heritage Site with a touch of old Amsterdam. Explore Christoffel National Park, snorkel in Caracas Bay, and ride the trolley train through the colourful city centre.

Day 32-34: Arrive in the port of Oranjestad today on the island of Aruba. This small island boasts stunning white sands, azure seas and colourful Dutch colonial buildings. Explore Aruba Arikok National Park on a 4WD tour, visit the National Archaeological Museum or simply relax on Eagle Beach. You'll spend the following two days at sea.

Days 35-38: On day 35, you'll reach your final destination, Fort Lauderdale. From the port, you'll make your way to the B Ocean Resort Fort Lauderdale Beach, where you'll enjoy a two-night stay before catching your flight back to Sydney.
