Vivid Sydney 2019: Lights, Music & Ideas

 Vivid Sydney comes to life on the 24th May. Until 15th June, the city will celebrate the curious intersection of art, technology and commerce like no other city on earth.  Whether you’re a Vivid regular, are travelling from far away to see what the city has in store or are a curious Sydneysider looking for an excuse to head out this autumn, prepare to be amazed. With so much to see and do, we thought we’d take a peek at what's to come.

Vivid Ideas
Bringing together a range of inspiring “thinkers, creators and innovators”, Vivid Ideas includes a series of debates, discussions and workshops throughout the city aimed at sharing insights across tech, design, entertainment and culture. Some of this year’s topics include the dark web, gender, racism, spirituality and creative writing. We’ve highlighted a selection of interesting talks sure to get you thinking.

Citizens of the World: How to be an Activist, Changing the Future Today
When: 5 June
Cost: $25

An evening of discussion and practical workshops, you’ll hear from a group of activists leading the way to create a better future. Inspiring you to shake up the status quo on climate, politics and societal issues, you’ll learn how to change the world and watch a special screening of ‘Landfill Harmonic’. More info. 

Vivid Art After Hours: Spirituality and Inner Life discussion
When: 29 May
Cost: Free

Join Author and radio and TV personality Meshel Laurie on the 29 May as she confesses to being a bad Buddhist. In this Vivid Art After Hours: Spirituality and Inner Life discussion she offers a snapshot of her life and the speed bumps and detours on the path to enlightenment. More info. 

Vivid Art After Hours: You Can’t Ask That
When: 12 June
Cost: Free
ABC TV’s hit show You Can’t Ask That, comes to life on the 12 June, as the panel asks groups of misunderstood, judged or marginalised Australians the uncomfortable questions you’ve always wanted to know the answers to, but thought, "I can’t ask that”. You’ll also hear the show’s producers Kirk Docker and Aaron Smith discuss the reasons for making the show.  More info. 

Vivid Music
As the city streets come to life with light-seeking tourists, you may want to escape indoors for a seat and an evening of live music. With a huge range of venues, critically acclaimed artists and emerging talent performances to choose from, the Vivid 2019 music line-up does not disappoint. Get set to welcome some huge names in 2019, including internationally acclaimed FKA Twigs. Known for her wild style as much as her music, she blends trip-hop, dub and electronic styles for a truly unique performance. Watch out for ARIA-winning Australian Rūfüs Du Sol, Paul Kelly and Kate Miller-Heidke.

X | Celerate 2019

Bringing together some of the country’s best new talent and live music venues around Sydney, X | Celerate offers a huge range of venues and styles of music meaning there’s something for everyone. With 23 inner-city venues, you can enjoy great live music while supporting emerging local bands and venues. For the full line up click here. 

Vivid Lights
Giant robots, dancing blades of grass, buzzing oversized bees and ginormous neon sea creatures are all a normal night in the city when Vivid comes to town. Whether you’re strolling the harbour foreshore, exploring the secret pathways of the Botanic Gardens or wandering Taronga Zoo, there are all sorts of ways to see the best that Vivid Lights has to offer – after all, it is the lights that have thousands flocking to Sydney every year.

Lights for the Wild at Taronga Zoo Sydney

Taronga Zoo is always a day of fun, but it gets even better over Sydney’s Vivid Festival with a display of incredible installations and light sculptures, each telling a fascinating story about our wildlife conservation. Starting with a dazzling, moving animal projection show, you’ll walk through the gates and explore an illuminated trail that winds through the stunning grounds of Taronga Zoo Sydney, showcasing awe-inspiring giant multimedia light sculptures: meet the magnificent Sumatran Tiger and her new gorgeous tiger cubs,  the vividly coloured Marine Turtle, a swarm of tiny buzzing bees and the larger-than-life gorilla family. Under the Harbour

Using the walls of Customs House as a canvas, you’ll take a dive into the depths of Sydney Harbour. Neon sea creatures swim through botanical wonderlands in this surreal underwater encounter sure to impress the little ones and adults alike. More info.

Pixar: 30 Years of Art and Animation
When: 24 May to 15 June
Cost: Free

Lie down on the ground, float your eyes to the tunnel rooftop and let your imagination run wild. Using projection technology to bring the imaginative worlds of Pixar’s films to life, you’ll join all your favourite Pixar characters, from Toy Story to Finding Nemo. This breathtaking installation in the heart of the Rocks is definitely not just for kids. More info.
