Overview

Mercure Aberdeen Caledonian Hotel is a Victorian stone property in central Aberdeen. The hotel has views of the pretty Union Terrace Gardens, just off Union street -- the main shopping hotspot -- and is round the corner from Castlegate, where you'll find museums, bars and restaurants.

Often known as the "Granite City", Aberdeen's streets are lined with oddles of pearly-grey imposing stone buildings, including a landmark which is now headquarters of the City Council -- 19th century Marischal College, a 10 minute walk from the hotel. You can explore lesser-known architecture with the Old Aberdeen Heritage Trail, on which you'll find the fairy-tale Powis Gate Towers, the 16th-century King's College Chapel and St Machar's Cathedral, which houses a quarter of the remains of William Wallace.

Aberdeen Maritime Museum and The Tolbooth Museum -- one of Aberdeen's oldest building and one of Scotland's best preserved gaols -- are both less than 10 minutes' walk from the hotel.

Aberdeen's sandy shores are 10 minutes' drive away, while the characterful old fishing village of Footdee, with its narrow lanes of stone cottages and brightly painted wooden shacks, is less than 10 minutes' drive from the hotel.

The Bistro bar and restaurant serves pre-dinner drinks, afternoon teas and classic fare. Deluxe rooms are larger than Standard rooms and have free bottles of water in the room.

Very friendly greeting from lovely lady on reception, who answered every question very well. She made us feel very welcome and gave tips on where to visit in Aberdeen. Other members of staff were friendly too.

I'm not a fan of buffet style breakfasts and this hotel did not hot plates to put the "warm", not hot food on. By the time you got back to your table, the food was tepid. As I said, I really didn't enjoy their breakfast.

Lovely large room at the front overlooking gardens. Ideal location, close to train station and shopping centres. Good buffet style breakfast. Friendly, professional staff.

I booked this hotel on impulse the day prior to our stay. The booking process was very easy. On arrival at the hotel we were welcomed by the receptionist and were allocated a room at the front of the hotel overlooking Union Terrace Gardens ( under reconstruction/development) and the skyline of the older part of the city. - It was quite a nice outlook and the modern room was bright having large windows. However, the windows were not double glazed and we heard the noise of the traffic for most of the night. The following morning we asked if it might be possible to change to a quieter room for our second night. The receptionist was extremely helpful and managed to find us another room of the same quality and facilities but minus the view. It was lovely and quiet at night. The breakfast is a buffet style with plenty of choice to cater for different needs or tastes. The hotel is an ideal base for exploring the Granite City and is very near to the beautifully renovated Art Gallery, the Central Library, the Belmont Film house and several shopping centres.

The reception staff were extremely efficient and were eager to help. In fact the whole experience of our stay was excellent and had it not been for the traffic noise on our first night I would have given 5 stars all round.

Always have liked the Caley since having lived in Aberdeen many years ago.

Hugely excessive noise from nightclubs in the city centre kept me awake until 3am. Hotel staff advise that this is a problem on Friday and Saturday nights that is beyond their control. Ear plugs are essential for these nights.
