  • The hotel is close to walks along Hadrian's Wall and 10 minutes’ drive from Corbridge’s picturesque centre
  • There’s a 27-hole golf course and an on-site spa with a swimming pool

Overview

"The full country house experience" (The Daily Telegraph) is on offer at Matfen Hall, a stately home hotel surrounded by the Northumbrian countryside. Set on 300 acres of parkland featuring a rose garden and a golf course, this grand lodging occupies a Gothic mansion dating from the 19th century.

The hotel is a short walk from both Hadrian’s Wall and the "charming" (The Daily Telegraph) estate village of Matfen, and a 10-minute drive from Corbridge, where cobbled streets are lined with cafés and boutiques. Chesters Roman Fort and Museum and the medieval ruins of Prudhoe Castle are a 15-minute drive away, while Newcastle city centre takes around 30 minutes to reach by car.

Matfen Hall opens to public spaces characterised by tartan fabrics, murals and rich drapes, and includes a drawing room with ornate ceilings. The Library restaurant serves contemporary dishes with a “robust Northumbrian feel” (The Daily Telegraph) in a book-lined dining room, as well as a conservatory bistro with views over the grounds and a pub with views of the golf course. Guests can play on the 27-hole golf course (fees apply), work out in the fitness room and relax in the spa, which offers an indoor pool, a sauna and a steam room. The spa is open from Monday-Thursday 6:30am-10pm, Friday-Saturday 6:30am-8pm, Sunday 8am-8:30pm You can also book spa treatments (must be pre-booked; supplements apply).

Guestrooms are spread between the main house and the hotel’s modern west wing, and range from contemporary to classic in style. Classic Double and Twin rooms are located in the west wing, Deluxe rooms are located in the west and east wing and Premier and Principal rooms are in the east wing. The east wing has stair access only. All include free Wi-Fi, TVs and mini fridges, plus tea- and coffee-making facilities. Higher-tariff rooms have balconies and sitting areas, while plush rooms in the main building offer garden views, bold wallpapers and antique-style furnishings. Room service is available.

Disappointed that our bedroom seemed to be the last to get ready. Despite us being there for 1pm our room was not finished until 3pm. I understand that this is the check in time but there was a steady stream of people arriving after us who got there keys before us? Also the bedroom was red hot and the windows didnt open. We both spent the night tossing and turning on top of the bed covers.

Lovely Hotel but was disappointed by the lack of finesse in certain rooms. Retardant bookshelves next to our table was dusty and covered in food crumbs. A Small detail like this can make all the difference.

The situation of the hotel in beautiful parkland is stunning and tranquil. The room was lovely, however the smaller of the 2 windows was dripping with condensation in the morning and the area seemed to be damp.
Other Comments
I selected the sea bream for dinner. The fish itself was cooked well, however it was served on top of a very soggy, greasy potato roti. The dish included a piece of deep fried celeriac which was so hard, I was unable to cut through more than a tiny section at the top. It was very unpleasant.
