"We'd read a few caustic reviews of Dean Valley Manor prior to our visit, so were slightly apprehensive when we arrived for our two night stay. We needn't have worried because everything about our stay was superb! Our room, although in need of updating, was clean and spacious overlooking part of the lovely grounds surrounding Dean Valley Manor. The staff, despite being quite young, were always attentive and courteous. The menu has a good choice of food to please most palates and is nicely cooked. We plan on going back for a second visit sometime very soon."

Why We Love This Hotel

  • Formerly known as Lindors Country House Hotel, the property came under new ownership in 2018 as Dean Valley Manor
  • You can explore the hotel's nine acres of wooded gardens, which feature waterfalls and pools
  • Facilities include a heated indoor swimming pool and a restaurant that serves British dishes made using seasonal local produce

Overview

Built in the 1850s, Dean Valley Manor (formerly known as Lindors Country House Hotel) is in the Wye Valley and Forest of Dean on the Welsh-English border.

The historic towns of Monmouth, known for its 13th-century gatehouse bridge, and Chepstow, home to the ruins of a Norman castle, are around 20 minutes' drive from the hotel. The edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park is a 40-minute drive away.

The Forest of Dean -- England's oldest oak forest -- is said to have inspired JRR Tolkien's Middle Earth in The Lord of The Rings books, and was filmed for scenes in "Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows".

The restaurant has views of the gardens and a seasonal menu that features dishes made using local produce. There is also a lounge bar that serves cream tea, drinks and nibbles, and has a log fire that you can cosy up in front of during colder months. In fine weather, you can enjoy a drink al fresco on the sun terrace.

The property has a heated indoor pool and nine acres of gardens to explore. It also has its own colony of bees, looked after by a local beekeeper, and you can buy the honey they produce.

Superior Rooms are larger than Standard Rooms and some have views of the lake or gardens.

We couldn't understand how anyone could give Dean Valley Manor such bad reviews. Personally, we couldn't fault the place. We reckon that the problem was actually with the reviewer, not the hotel!

Whill we were there unfortunately the fire alarm went off in the nigh, and it wasn't a false alarm. Although this was unfortunate the girl on duty was wonderful checking we were all out and running back to get people who weren't. Firefighters dealt with it quickly and although I wouldn't repeat the experience the hotel coped with it very well

Four of us went to Dean Valley Manor. All reports on Trip Adviser very negative so were unsure about our booking. Having booked at least 6 travelzoo hotels this year I was sure they wouldnt let us down - and they didnt. All staff were really pleasant and helpful. Dinner and breakfast were cooked fresh and thoroughly enjoyable. The swimming pool was well heated, I didnt want to get out!. The men played table tennis in the conservatory where they was a large screen tv. Our bedroom had a view of a waterfall with ducks living there. With a bottle of prosecco on arrival it was one of the best deals we have booked. Also the staff sorted out a 2 mile circular walk through the forest which we did before we left. Thank You, this was a night enjoyed by us all.

We would definitely go back to this hotel in the future as felt it was badly reviewed when the staff were genuinely trying to make our stay a pleasant one. Yes, the hotel is old and dated but we sat in front of a roaring fire with a 17th century fireplace and the rooms downstairs were all oak panelled - what's not to like??

The ducks on the pond. Avoid this hotel like the plague.

There was no heating and it was cold, the room was right over the bar lounge and caused disturbance at night, the place is tawdry and unwelcoming, the food is wildly overpiriced and basic pub grub. There is nothing to recommend this place!

The surrounding scenery was wonderful
Other Comments
The dinner menu was poor. Poor choice, mainly burgers, ham chips and eggs, not what you would expect. The steak meal had a four pound ninety five supplement. Very disappointed. The heating in the room was almost non existent and rhe rest of the place felt cold. Would not recommend. Would not go again.

Prosecco turned out to be Prosecco Frizzante which is definitely NOT Prosecco, as advertised. When I pointed this out, I was told it was what they call Prosecco! The dinner menu consisted mainly of burgers, and 1 salmon dish. No eggs at breakfast, chef wasn't there!

Beautiful gardens, needs a bit of TLC on the inside!, Dining room was lacking atmosphere, when evening dining
Other Comments
The swimming pool was really good, very clean, the staff at breakfast we're very cheerful also the breakfast was very good, I think the heating system may need some attention!! radiators in our room weren't particularly good, and after chatting to some other resedents or couple had no heating and no heater was provided so they bought there own!!!!
