Grand Royale London Hyde Park offers "sumptuous Edwardian elegance" (The AA) within easy reach to many major London attractions. Set on a tree-lined street, the hotel occupies an imposing building with an ornate stone façade, and is rumoured to have been built on behalf of Edward VII for his mistress, the actress and socialite Lillie Langtry. The Diana Memorial Playground is five minutes' walk away, while two of London’s most fashionable areas, Notting Hill Gate and Kensington High Street, are 10 to 15 minutes' walk away. Kensington Palace, the Royal Albert Hall and the Science Museum all take around 20 minutes to reach on foot, while Oxford Street, Regent Street and Soho are around 10 minutes away by Tube.

The lavish interios include a lobby lounge with leather sofas, wood-panelled walls, stained-glass windows and a marble fireplace. There's a refined dining room where breakfast is served, and the theatre-inspired bar has a proscenium arch, period auditorium seats and mirrored walls. A chocolate afternoon tea with a glass of prosecco for two, is now $31 (GBP 24).

Rooms are modern in design, with a soft neutral colour scheme and wood furnishings. Each room has free Wi-Fi, a TV, and tea- and coffee-making facilities. Higher-tariff rooms include slippers, fruit baskets and access to an exclusive lounge. There's also a suite named after Lillie Langtry, which comes with a 4-poster bed, antique-style furnishings and a bathroom with a claw-foot tub.

Some of the Rumanian staff were very nice and friendly, including the young man, Raimundas, who finally moved us to a better room, and the dining room (breakfast) staff, as well as the reception staff.

The first night we were given a "deluxe double superior" that was so small that it could barely fit one person, let alone two. The window was tiny. The desk and chair pushed right against the bed so unusable. We were allowed to check in early, but once we got up we hit our feet and legs aginst the bed every time we moved. I asked to be moved to another room the next day because of this and incipient claustrophobia. The other room which was nice was also called a "deluxe double superior" ( they said all the rooms regardless of size are called that so caveat emptor. ) That room for the nest 2 nights was 3 times as large, had a big window, and a desk and chair where we could use Internet. The breakfast was fairly good ( btw the scrambled eggs aren't real eggs) and in a nice room. The Queensway/Bayswater area is fairly grubby and polluted. We did not get good directions on transport and ended up at the wrong underground station when we arrived, got lost, and had to take a taxi. No help with taking the bus to local attractions. Ended up getting very sick (probably underground), and they did let us us check out 2 hours later than usual which we appreciated. Definitely not worth the cost.

We did not actually stay at the Grand Royal but at their sister hotel just down the road, they gave an excuse that there were technical problems with some of the rooms at the Grand Royal. The alternative was Ok but not exactly Grand

When we arrived we were told that because of “maintenance” there wasn’t a room for us “but we were ok as they could arrange a room in one of their other hotels further down the road & would that be ok”. I said not really as we had been looking forward to staying there. I asked my husband what he thought but he is hard of hearing & said he would leave it to me. I turned to the male hotel worker worker and said no it wasn’t ok. He said he would have to speak to his manager. He came back and said well ok, then we will have to move someone else out of the hotel to make room for you! What a load of baloney. He then said we needed to check the room out first as he thought there were too many steps inside the room. There were 7 steep steps from the hotel room down to the bed. I told him it was ok, we were staying I had watched how the reception staff had dealt with the Chinese couple in front of us & there was no mention of moving them to a different hotel! I felt we were insignificant. I felt we didn’t matter & therefore they could do what they wanted with us.
