"Up to a point we thought the hotel was a gem especially for the price. We enjoyed our one dinner there and the continental breakfasts. And then a problem ! We left at 8 o'clock in the morning our first full day there to be good tourists. When we returned we found our room had not been touched, the towels were still on the floor where we had left them, bed not made, etc. We did not leave a "Do Not Disturb" sign or any reason not to clean the room. Why would you ? It was our anniversary and this was a let down."

Overview

Opened in 1937, the Monte Vista Hotel is housed in a former schoolhouse and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Throughout its lifetime, the property has added a second structure and undergone renovations to offer modern amenities. Located in Black Mountain, the boutique hotel is a five-minute walk from the charming town square’s restaurants, shops and museums. The surrounding area offers year-round outdoor activities including skiing, hiking and winery tours.

The intimate hotel has only 45 guest rooms, each uniquely outfitted with mountain-inspired décor. All accommodations include hardwood floors, Wi-Fi, bottled water and king or queen beds. Bathrooms feature showers and tubs, vessel sinks and rustic tilework.

Milton’s, the on-site restaurant, sources regional ingredients for its Southern cuisine and is open Wednesday through Saturday for dinner, as well as weekend brunch. Guests can also stop in the bar for a cocktail, local craft beer or glass of wine before exploring the town.

Lovely vintage hotel just a couple of blocks away from downtown Black Mountain. The atmosphere is great and the staff were very friendly. Our room was on the third floor, no elevator. The room is spartan having only a straight back chair to sit, no thermostat (this may vary by room) and a bed although comfortable was so noisy that a light sleeper (like me) will be awakened with every move. We got a deal on the room through Travelzoo, and I always wonder if you end up with a sub par room because of the reduced rate. On a positive note, the room was very clean. The bathroom was spotless but the commode lid was falling off which we mentioned at checkout. We ate dinner in the restaurant in the hotel and it was delicious with a very attentive server. Continental breakfast is adequate, but we were disappointed there was no fresh fruit except a bowl of oranges. The scones were quite good. Bar service was good with reasonable prices.

My advice is to upgrade room if possible from a 1937 Queen room. It is a difficult climb for anyone who may have knee or back issues.

The ambience was nice BUT the level of noise traveling between rooms was a bit disruptive. Incredible staff!!

The hotel was outstanding. We really enjoyed our time! Rooms are small but that’s what you get for an older inn! I emailed the hotel to make sure we had a room with AC because we were traveling with our 2 month old and they emailed back promptly saying we would have a quiet room with AC!! My only complaint was with the free $10 credit for food and beverage. They said the credit was only for food and nonalcoholic beverages. That was never stated to us when we checked in. The coupon they did give us only stated food credit...

I would stay again at this hotel. Great location! I just wouldn’t expect a food or beverage credit.

We basically only slept and showered. The place was clean.

There wasn’t an exhaust fan in the bathroom. I know this is an old building, but there was mildew all over the bathroom ceiling, the top of the walls and doorframe.

We loved the location of The Monte Vista Hotel in Black Mountain. The hotel was very clean, room was very large and the continental breakfast was excellent. The only problem we had was the smoking guests. Smoking was allowed on the front porch and on the back patio, I think they should allow smoking in the back area not on the beautiful front porch.
