Why We Love This Hotel

  • All rooms come with chic decor and floor-to-ceiling windows offering views of downtown
  • Within walking distance of major attractions like the Toyota Center, Jones Hall for the Performing Arts and Discovery Green park
  • Upscale amenities include the fifth-floor outdoor pool deck, in-room bar cart service and free rides around the downtown area in the hotel's Maserati
  • The haunt of the who's-who of Houston, the on-site Bar Bardot has welcomed celebrity guests like Texan's linebackers Whitney Mercilus and Brian Peters

Overview

Situated between the Central Business District and Theater District, the Hotel Alessandra puts guests at arm's reach of top attractions like Minute Maid Park (less than a mile away) and GreenStreet shopping center, just around the corner. Yes, it's in the heart of the action, but the hotel's prime real estate isn't all it has to offer. Lavish amenities and interior design -- for instance, complimentary car service in a Maserati or the grand marble staircase in the lobby -- also help place the Alessandra among the top five hotels in Houston (TripAdvisor).

Clean lines and natural light abound in guest rooms outfitted with brass fixtures and pops of jade green. Bathrooms equipped with free-standing soaking tubs feature marble counter tops and walk-in showers with rainfall shower-heads. Nespresso machines also come standard as well as free Wi-Fi and flat-screen TVs.

Although downtown Houston has no shortage of dining options, we recommend the French-inspired Mediterranean fare on the menu at Lucienne, the on-site restaurant. Alternatively, swing in to Bar Bardot, where craft-cocktails are served in a vintage atmosphere that feels "Mad Men ... in the best way possible" (Houstonia magazine).

Other Comments
Very plush with an excellent staff, and we greatly enjoyed our stay. However, two things that a high-end hotel should have were missing from our bathroom: a lighted make-up mirror and a wall-mounted rod or ring at the bathroom sink so we could hang up a hand towel. Also, both the toilet and the shower (rain plus hand-held) are in separate compartments accessed by heavy, partially frosted glass doors. Unfortunately, the lower third of the glass door into the toilet is clear so it lacks a visual clue that you had best watch where you place your feet when opening that door. Cut toe -- blood on rug -- both our own faults. It would be nice, though, if some sort of solid color decal could be placed right on the bottom corner to make it more visible and to remind guests that it is there. Also be aware that there were no normal-sized drawers in our room, just some hard-to-use shelves in the two nightstands and high shelves in the two closets. At the very least, a small, four-drawer chest should be added. Using the comp Valet/Maserati for short in-downtown trips proved impossible because we could not reserve a specific time -- it was first come, first served, and we never managed to be "first" in several tries over a two-night stay. Also, the automatic 20% tip added to drinks served at the pool made them outrageously expensive (our two drinks totaled slightly over $41.00), and we saw very few guests ordering more than one. One group near us at the pool had brought a rolling ice chest filled with wine, beer, soft drinks and so on; good thing, as otherwise their bar bill would have been stratospheric. The hotel would make a lot more money off their pool service if the charges were somewhere within the range of reason. As it is, they are taking advantage of their guests, not a good practice if they want to encourage repeat business.
