A winding tree-lined road through the County Mayo countryside leads to Breaffy House Hotel, set in 90 acres of lush grounds. Part of a resort complex, the hotel occupies an imposing country house with a stone façade, which dates from the 1890s, and is located a 10-minute walk from Breaffy village centre. Both Castlebar, “a commercial and shopping hub for the region” (Fodor’s), and the Museum of Country Life are a 10-minute drive away, whilst “bright and vibrant” Westport “a photogenic Georgian town” (Lonely Planet) is 20 minutes’ drive away. The sacred mountain Croagh Patrick, which offers panoramic bay views, is 40 minutes’ drive from the hotel and Achill Island, known for its dramatic cliffs and picturesque beaches, takes about an hour to reach by car.
Breaffy House Hotel opens to a polished lobby area, which includes a lounge with an ornate stone fireplace. There’s a smart restaurant serving an international menu, which overlooks the grounds, as well as a rustic-vibe bar featuring walls crammed with prints and portraits, banquettes and a terrace area. Guests can work out in the gym, go for a dip in the indoor pool and relax in the sauna and steam room, whilst the on-site spa offers a range of beauty treatments (fees may apply). Other amenities include a kids’ club and a sports arena.
Overlooking the estate, the hotel’s guestrooms are decorated in a traditional style with a soft neutral colour palette and wood furnishings. All include free Wi-Fi, TVs, and tea- and coffee-making facilities. Suites add living space, and bathrooms with freestanding baths and underfloor heating, whilst the hotel’s top-level quarters have separate living rooms.
