The “beautiful” Lough Rynn Castle Estate & Gardens offers “lovely” accommodation in County Leitrim, an area known for its “untamed landscape and authentic rural charm” (Lonely Planet). Occupying a picturesque lakeside setting on 30 acres of lush parkland, the hotel is housed in a “sympathetically restored Victorian manor” (The AA), along with converted stables, and is about 10 minutes’ drive from the market town of Mohill. Carrick-on-Shannon, “full of architectural surprises” (Fodor’s) is 20 minutes’ drive way, whilst Strokestown Park and the National Famine Museum, are about a 30-minute drive from the hotel. Arigna Mining Experience, offering tours of an underground coal mine, takes about 40 minutes to reach by car.
“Style and grandeur” (The AA) characterise Lough Rynn Castle Estate & Gardens interiors, which feature antique-style furnishings, richly patterned fabrics and wood-panelled walls hung with gilt-framed portraits. There’s a stately lounge with an imposing stone fireplace, an ornate carved wood dresser and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the grounds, as well as a cosy library dedicated to John McGahern, the renowned local author. Guests can dine in the 2-AA-Rosette restaurant, which uses ingredients grown on site, sip drinks amid suits of armour in the hotel’s Gothic-inspired bar, and explore the manicured walled gardens which border the lake.
The hotel’s bedrooms are spread between the castle and “converted outhouses” (The AA), and are decorated in an old world style with sumptuous drapes and traditional wood furnishings. All include free Wi-Fi, TVs and bathrooms with heated floors. Rooms in the elegant renovated stables have a medieval theme, and the hotel offers two suites including one with a 4-poster bed, living area and Jacuzzi, and one with a rooftop terrace, roll top bath and steam room. Polished self-catering cottages with three bedrooms, kitchens and living rooms are also available.
