Overview

The Imperial Crown Hotel is a 19th-century former residence in the centre of Halifax in West Yorkshire. The town sits halfway between the Yorkshire Dales and Peak District national parks, and is around 30 minutes' drive from Leeds.

The "jaw-dropping" (The Guardian) Piece Hall, Calderdale Industrial Museum and Eureka! The National Children's Museum are all less than five minutes' walk from the hotel, as is the Grade II-listed town hall. The 600-year-old medieval manor and grounds of Shibden Hall are around 25 minutes' walk away, while Bankfield Museum -- a Victorian mansion and park -- is around 20 minutes' walk away. Other sights, such as Scammonden Reservoir, Ogden Water Country Park and Wainhouse Tower -- the tallest folly in the world -- are within a 15-minute drive of the hotel.

For a day out in the Yorkshire Dales, we recommend a visit to Bolton Abbey on the banks of the River Wharfe, less than 40 minutes' drive north of the hotel. Its 30,000 acres are home to over 80 miles of footpaths and the ruins of a 12th-century priory. Alternatively, you can head south to explore the rolling hills of the Peak District National Park or walk the heritage trail at Marsden Moor Estate -- a National Trust site less than 25 minutes' drive away. Here you can also join the Pennine Way, a 270-mile walking route that runs from the Peak District to the Scottish borders.

The Crown Restaurant serves British classics made using local ingredients. Wi-Fi is free.

We enjoyed our time in Halifax - but because of an ill fitting window, the room was noisy at night which took the shine off it as we didn't sleep well. Perhaps we were just unlucky that lots of people were out and about into the early hours. Don't let that put you off the Imperial Crown as a whole but packing some ear plugs might be a good idea in case you get rm 111.
