"Well, that is difficult since everything was just about perfect! I loved my 2 dogs were able to come along with us. I loved the architecture of the Stanley Hotel and the Lodge! At first I thought I was getting a second rate location since we were in the Lodge with our pets however I think we got the better location. The Stanley Hotel gets so much traffic of folks visiting and only folks who are registered guests can go upstairs to the rooms. In the Lodge, only guests are allowed in the building. Our visit was so beautiful with the views, the National Park and staying at The Stanley Hotel! The staff was superb in our stay and we want to thank one and all!"

Overview

Opened in 1909, The Stanley Hotel is registered as a National Historic Landmark but is best-known for serving as inspiration for Stephen King’s "The Shining." The property is famously haunted by its original owner and his wife; both can be seen in Victorian-era formal wear on the main staircase, and her piano plays on its own. In 2015, a replica maze from the film's chase scene was constructed on the grounds.

The Georgian-style hotel overlooks Rocky Mountain National Park and is a five-minute drive from downtown Estes Park’s restaurants and boutiques. Outdoorsy guests will find hiking, fishing, skiing and golfing within a 15-minute drive of the hotel.

Guests have a variety of accommodation options at this hotel; most include free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, seating areas and the choice of one king or two queen beds. The main building features traditional rooms as well as upgraded options like rooms with Jacuzzi tubs and views of the Rocky Mountains. The Lodge offers an intimate experience on the storied grounds with dog-friendly rooms. Built in 2016, the Aspire Residences feature apartment-like condos with kitchens, sofa beds in the living rooms and 360-degree views of the national park.

Dining is available for breakfast, lunch and dinner at Cascades, where guests can eat fireside or dine alfresco in spring and summer. On weekends, Table hosts a rotation of celebrity chefs offering a five-course pre-fixe menu. The property also features a casual coffee shop and a bar boasting the state’s largest whiskey selection. Visitors and locals alike can snag tickets to comedy shows, rock concerts and special speakers at the hotel’s Stanley Live venue.

From the press:
  • "The experience served as the inspiration for 'The Shining,' and this, in tandem with ghost stories galore, makes a stay an absolute must for horror (and King) fans" -- Frommer’s

The meals in the restaurant were very good.

Although I made reservations in July, our room was terrible...between the elevator and a slamming door that must have been opened and closed hundreds of times while we were there.

The authenticity of the building. Enjoyed the elevator. The bed was very comfortable.

There was to be complimentary wine in the room as per when I booked it, but there was not. There was no screen on the window and we had to have it open for air, we could have had a bird as a visitor. Light bulb was out in the bathroom.

Room in lodge was a bit tight (no chair), and the stopgap portable ac unit didn’t function properly ( not an issue in the cool evening). Wine tasting was a nice perk, and the porch seating terrific. Make reservations to eat on site, and skip the spirit tour!!

The great location, beautiful view, and the interesting history behind the hotel.

I think the hotel needs a deep cleaning and some sprucing up. Our room had dust on the dresser, and the bathroom vanity had water damage down the front and toothpaste splatter on the mirror. In the public areas I noticed lots of dings and dents on the woodwork and furniture. Surfaces just looked a little worn and grubby. Nothing major, but impacted the ambience. I feel like the hotel is coasting on it's location and fame. Our 4th-floor room was incredibly small with the bed under the eaves. I bumped my head multiple times. However, I think we got a good value and I'm glad we stayed there.
