The 4.5-star hotel has been the heart of the city's social and cultural scene for more than 100 years
Located in downtown Wilmington and the Brandywine Valley, this hotel was built in 1913 by French and Italian craftsman who carved and painted much of the noteworthy features by hand

Overview
Since 1913, HOTEL DU PONT, an Historic Hotel of America, has hosted such luminaries as Prince Rainier of Monaco, President John F. Kennedy and Eleanor Roosevelt. This 4-star property is the grand dame of Delaware hotels and sits in the heart of downtown Wilmington.
Guests are welcomed into a lavish lobby that radiates “old school glamour” (Conde Nast Traveler). Everything from the painted ceiling, furnishings and marble walls is posh and art-inspired. Classic King rooms, at 300 square feet, are cozy and styled with Old-World European decor. Upgraded rooms feature a separate sitting area, deep soaking tubs and free Wi-Fi. There’s a 24-hour fitness center on site for all guests to use. The hotel also offers a free car service to and from the downtown Amtrak train station, based on availability and advance notice.
Known for impeccable food and service, the Green Room is a must-visit; this on-site restaurant has earned many awards, including the state's only AAA 4-Diamond award for a restaurant. The Lobby Lounge is also open for casual afternoon tea, light fare or happy hour, with live tunes on the grand piano.
The city of Wilmington is small, but it has a vibrant arts and social scene with restaurants, tax-free shopping, and museums and art galleries nearby. The Winterthur Museum and Gardens, a 15-minute drive away, is home to 700 acres of gardens, woodlands and a museum. The nearby Playhouse on Rodney Square is a famed theater dating back to 1913; it hosts national Broadway performances, comedies and concerts.

Overall we had a great time, thanksgiving buffet was excellent, clean room, great restaurants, beautiful decor and lounge areas, friendly staff, however in our last night I believe there was a weeding or some sort of social event, and most of the guests were at the same floor as us. Talk about a nightmare of a night!!! We were with our 22 months old baby and he and us would wake up every 15 minutes from 11 to mid of the night with drunk people singing, screaming and talking extremely loudly in the hallway! I must say, if that were our first night we would probably checked out next morning, but fortunately it was the last.

The rooms were outdated, the fixtures in the bathroom didn't match, and the tiles had mildew. There was a column in the room that blocked 40% of the TV when sitting in the bed. We moved a chair over and there were dark spots from where it was had been like it hadn't been moved in a decade.

Key card machine not working for entire stay. Required escort to hotel room. No communication from hotel about where things stood except a vague promise from front desk to deliver keys when they were ready, which never materialized. I would expect a 5 star hotel to rise to the occasion especially since the staff said the problem has happened before. It would have been preferable to receive communication before I checked in and offered an alternative date. It wasn't a hotel stay as much as a prison stay.

Our room was nice, but not any nicer than most nice chain hotel rooms. I expected more from the Hotel Dupont. What I found really disappointing was that our room had no facilities for making coffee, and did not offer complimentary coffee anywhere. Made for a very grumpy morning. Also, most hotels these days have a refrigerator in the room. Having had leftovers from our lovely meal in the hotel bar, we had nowhere to store the food. All the finer hotels provide you with complimentary bottled water as well. Not here. These are perks you come to expect. We stay in different hotels often. This turned out to be the least convenient in amenities.

My room was too small compared to my last stay. I didn't have any drawers to put my clothes in. I didn't have anywhere to put my toiletries.
There aren't any ice machines. You have to ask the front desk to bring you ice. The fire alarm was tripped by a power surge in the middle of the night and we had to exit the building thru the stairwell. We were on the 7th floor.

It all has to do with my appointed hotel room. Stained and dirty carpet and upholstery; peeling wallpaper; discolored caulking around tub and tub tile; dead bugs in ceiling light fixture near the door and a stale room odor. I expected so much more from Hotel DuPont! I never imagined that the discount rate was a tradeoff for a subpar room. Our discount rate was $149 a night if given the choice and all info I would not have booked no matter the discount. Hotel DuPont, it is not a good look, take your rooms in need of rehab out of circulation.

The hotel room itself was nice, very spacious and comfortable. The service was a little strange - we had hotel staff knock and start to enter the room twice before we had the chance to tell them we were there and the room shouldn't be entered. Also, the Green Room restaurant was just average food, strange service, and over-priced. I'd recommend staying at the hotel, but avoiding the restaurant.

If this is the signature hotel of the city of Wilmington, Wilmington has a long way to go to become a destination. Having stayed at other Historic Hotels, like the Penn Hotel in Pittsburgh, I was expecting a similar experience. From the start, there were issues -- from a TINY room, to a 3/4 window shade/blind that wouldn't go up (even though the view was of the back of the building, daylight is nice) to the front desk staff who didn't know whether meters were being enforced on the Presidents Day holiday and wouldn't look it up when I asked if they could find out, to the cafe being closed during regular hours to due to a private party (but no sign of anyone in there) and having to eat in the bar where I paid $9 for one beer, to no maps of the local area for running (so I mapped out my own routes, one of which I would not recommend) to no knowledge of the property's history or any sense of pride in the city/local attractions, etc. -- I even got a snarky reply when I threw them a bone in the hopes that they might promote their property or show some enthusiasm by asking if there was a story behind the macaroons -- the front desk gentleman just said "Du Pont was French, macaroons are French" -- he might as well have said - "duh" at the end because that was his tone. Just an overall grumpy vibe -- not welcoming at all. And the hotel was practically empty, so it wasn't like they were too busy to go the extra (or even first) mile. Bottom line: I saw the special rate and booked this as a treat, but $119 per night was no bargain for this level of indifference. I hope this was an aberration, or maybe they just don't like Travelzoo guests as much as those who pay full price! I would recommend that management do an all-staff (or at least front desk) training on customer service, property history, and Wilmington pride. Thanks for asking.

One big disappointment: Had booked afternoon tea for day of arrival so made our outing plans accordingly. Checked in, got dressed up for tea and arrived to find our reservation had been erroneously entered for the following week by the person taking the reservation.
There was plenty of space however we could not have a Royal Tea. We were told we could order a cup of tea and sandwich off the menu - not the same experience at all.
And because it was 3:30, it was then too late to be able to make an alternative choice to tour the DuPont estates which all close at 4pm. Very disappointing.
Note: we breakfasted in Green Room - seemed understaffed and staff seemed very harried and not especially friendly.

I have left a message with the hotel to talk about the Café and areas that could be improved.

Elegance and sense of history. Green Room dining room was excellent.

Weekends (Fri and Sat) can be quite crowded and noisy downstairs due to frequent weddings and other events. Go during the week (Sun - Thurs) if you have the option

The staff were friendly and the hotel is beautiful.

We had been there 4 times before and were use to the nice room. The room we got was not so nice. Also the restaurant is a main reason we go and the menu was pre-fixed. We wish we were told that when we booked. We would have picked another day.

Not a great neighborhood warned by hotel staff not to be out after dark. The room that we saw on the travelzoo site was not the room we got. We had stayed there before, and we thought we would be getting that same type of room, we were disappointed with that.

The breakfast was either a buffet or you could order whatever you wanted (up to the large allowed price point) on the menu. We ordered off the menu both days and ate in the formal dinning room the first morning and in the cafe the next day.

Everyone made us feel genuinely welcome. There is a special ambience to be found in a turn of the century old hotel such as the Dupont. And the Travelzoo deal made it a bargain as well.
Other Comments
Of special note was the young lady serving breakfast whose warm welcome and cheerful personality along with helpful insights made the start of our day memorable. She is a credit to the Dupont and has great potential for a long term career in the hospitality field.
