Why We Love This Hotel

  • The hotel has views of the mountains of Snowdonia National Park, which is a 15-minute drive away
  • Criccieth Beach, which has a Blue Flag, is five minutes' walk away
  • 13th-century Criccieth Castle is a 10-minute walk from the hotel
  • Frommer's describes Criccieth as one of the "best towns on the peninsula", due to its location -- Porthmadog and Portmeirion are within 20 minutes' drive

Overview

The 18th-century Lion Hotel Criccieth is on the Llŷn Peninsula, a 5-minute walk from the Blue Flag-awarded Criccieth Beach and 15 minutes' drive from Snowdonia National Park -- you can see the mountains and the sea from the hotel.

Criccieth Castle, which dates back to the 1230s, is a 10-minute walk from the hotel. Its ruins are perched on a cliff and offer views along the southern coast of the peninsula and over to Harlech.

Frommer's describes Criccieth as one of the "best towns on the peninsula", due to its location; the harbour town of Porthmadog is a 10-minute drive away and marks the start of the 91-mile Llŷn Coastal Path, which runs around the peninsula to Caernarfon.

Portmeirion, made famous in the TV series "The Prisoner", is 20 minutes away. This Italianate village was designed by Sir Clough Williams-Ellis.

The Llewelyn Restaurant is closed November-March, but food is available in the Mane Place Bar. The bar serves British cuisine made using local produce. Sunday carvery is served throughout the year and on New Year's Day.

The hotel was lovely, very clean. Also the bedroom had been updated in recent times, was a good size and extremely clean. Very nice stay.

My only complaint would be, which is personal to me, that I think the TV in the bedroom on the wall could have been bigger and the bed could have been a kingsize instead of double.

This was a return to The Lion Hotel as requested by my husband for his birthday as we enjoyed our previous visit and we like the area. The hotel is warm and welcoming with a gas imitation coal fire in the reception area, comfortable seating and a selection of games and books. The bedroom on the first floor, room 12, faces towards Criccieth so in the evening we could see a partial sun set. There is a lift up from the ground floor which we confirmed when booking as my husband has some mobility issues and our room had a walk-in shower and thick bath towels. The bed was really comfortable. Even though the radiator was at zero it was still warm and eventually we opened the double glazed window for a bit of fresh air. It's fair to say that areas of the hotel could do with freshening but that did not detract from the experience. On Friday morning a cooked breakfast was served to order from a comprehensive list of options. On Saturday it was self service from a heated buffet table. Both evenings we ate at the bar and enjoyed our choices from the menu. The portions were generous and after my starter of Welsh rarebit it was as well I hadn't ordered a mains. Most of the attractions around Criccieth were closed out of season but we went down to the beach despite the cold and drove around enjoying the spectacular scenery. We arrived in rain but then had two cold, frosty, sunny days with blue skies which was a bonus. We will have to try and plan another visit in summer.
