Overview

Knoll House is a family-run hotel in a "sensational setting" (The Daily Telegraph) on the Isle of Purbeck in Dorset. It is five minutes' walk from the National Trust's Studland Bay, which has a 4-mile-long beach with views of Old Harry Rocks. This protected stretch of coastline boasts rugged heathland, nature reserves and crystal-clear waters for bathing and watersports.

The hotel was a regular retreat of children's author Enid Blyton. It is said she used Studland when envisaging Toytown for her Noddy books, and that Brownsea Island and Corfe Castle provided inspiration for her Famous Five series. The castle, which has over 1000 years of history to delve into, is less than 15 minutes' drive away, as is Swanage, which has a pier and a steam railway.

Fort Henry, a Grade II-listed bunker where Winston Churchill, President Eisenhower and King George VI once watched troops rehearsing for D-Day, is a 15-minute walk from the hotel. Keep an eye out for the pillboxes and Dragon's Teeth anti-tank obstacles dotted about the area.

Another nearby attraction is Agglestone Rock -- a 400-tonne sandstone block also known as the Devil's Anvil -- which is a 5-minute drive or a 25-minute walk away. You can drive 35 minutes to see Durdle Door, or walk 35 minutes along the South West Coast Path towards Shell Bay, where a ferry runs across to Sandbanks peninsula every 20 minutes.

Leisure facilities at the hotel include a 9-hole pitch-and-putt course, tennis courts, and indoor and outdoor swimming pools (the outdoor pool is open from April to September). Dogs can stay in some rooms (£15 per dog, per night; bedding is not provided), but they are prohibited in dining and leisure areas. Wi-Fi is free.

crockery was not always clean and we gave up asking for water on our table - however, this did not detract from our enjoyment of our stay

The location and views of Old Harry Rocks were lovely. There also appeared to be plenty of activities for children an families to get involved in (eg play Park outside). The Hotel is reminiscent of a Colonial tea planters house and with suitable attention to the points raised and a sharp reduction in quoted prices could become a sought after venue again. Our deal through Travelzoo represented Average to Good Value for Money.

The room (32) needs a complete clean, refurb and upgrade. The TV was virtually invisible on a low table at the foot of the bed. On the other side of the room the kettle was placed on a tall chest of drawers with no power socket nearby necessitating grappling on the floor under the TV table. (Suggested solution-move TV to top of chest of drawers and run extension power lead and aerial feed to serve it. Place kettle on small table where TV was). Tiles in shower cubicle showed black mould in places. Shower unit was encrusted with lime on auxiliary jets (which didn't work). Food in restaurant was only of average quality and grossly overpriced. Tea in Brasserie looked lovely, but menu price was extortionate £18 each (although ours was inclusive-thanks Travelzoo). Acoustics of Brasserie resembled an old-fashioned village hall.

All the staff were very helpful and accomodating throughout our stay. The room was lovely and the bed very comfortable. Lots of lovely little areas within in the hotel to sit and chill with fantastic views.

Great location close to each with good walks from the doorstep
Other Comments
Staff friendly but not helpful when trying to book ,the hotel is going through a period of change with future redevelopment planned . This probably has a reflection on morale and explains why things seem a little dated.
