  • "Spacious" (The AA) public areas include a wood-panelled lounge with open fires and a modern bar

Overview

"Inviting and popular" (The AA), The George Hotel is in the centre of Penrith, a bustling town with tea rooms, cosy pubs and a lively market on Tuesdays. The hotel is five minutes' walk from the red ruins of Penrith Castle, which dates from the 14th century and was built as a defence against Scottish raids.

Dalemain Mansion and Historic Gardens, and Ullswater -- one of the largest lakes in the Lake District, offering a variety of watersports and walking trails -- are less than 20 minutes' drive away. Keswick -- which Lonely Planet claims has "perhaps the most beautiful location...encircled by cloud-capped fells and nestled alongside the idyllic, island-studded lake of Derwentwater" -- is 25 minutes' drive from the hotel.

The George Hotel is on the C2C Sea to Sea Cycle Route. The property can store bikes and arrange packed lunches.

The hotel's public spaces retain a "timeless charm" (The AA), and are decorated with antique-style furnishings, vivid stained glass and local prints. Guests can sample traditional English cuisine in the restaurant, which has richly patterned drapes, a fireplace and an ornate ceiling, or enjoy light lunches and afternoon tea in the lounge. The bar serves a variety of beers and cocktails.

The "well equipped" (The AA) bedrooms have warm, neutral-toned décor and come with free Wi-Fi, a TV and tea- and coffee-making facilities.

We asked for a quiet room on the back for our return visit as rooms on the front get noise from the road below. However, the room was not as spacious particularly the bathroom. Nicest rooms do appear to be located to the front of the hotel.. So perhaps it's a choice between quiet and space. Nevertheless the hotel continues to meet all our expectations in terms of quality of service, food and ambience. We especially enjoyed the Christmas decorations although a little early much preferred to ghastly halloween displays!
