Overview

The AA Hotel Guide 2017 describes Fredrick's Hotel, Restaurant & Spa as a "stylish and well-run hotel set in attractive grounds" on the edge of Maidenhead.

The 2-AA-Rosette restaurant serves a classic British menu influenced by modern French cuisine. You can eat in the formal restaurant or outside on the heated terrace. Afternoon tea is served daily (at an extra cost), and make sure to check out the bar with its Gin Pantry -- an eclectic selection of gins from around the world, served on the rocks, with tonic water and fresh raspberries, or neat.

Popular as a weekend retreat beyond the hustle and bustle of London, Fredrick's boasts a spa with an indoor-and-outdoor pool, a steam room, a relaxation area and sun loungers (minimum age to use the spa is 16; minimum age for treatments is 18). You can hop on a train at Paddington railway station and be at the hotel within the hour.

Windsor -- with its royal castle and ancient parkland roamed by deer, and home to Legoland Windsor Resort -- is less than 20 minutes' drive away. You can head to the High Street to watch the Changing of the Guards ceremony on certain days.

Ascot Racecourse and the pretty Thames-side towns of Sonning, Henley and Marlow, are within 20 minutes' drive of the hotel. Reading, known for the 12th-century abbey ruins built by Henry I and its restaurants along the river, is around 25 minutes' drive.

Exactly where we wanted to be for a very good price. Swimming in the outdoor part of the spa pool was wonderful at 8 am in the morning.

The hotel really needs updating and a little more tlc as in superb location and the grounds are lovely - I think then it might be frequented by more than Travelzoo and Wowcher purchasers. The evening meal in the restaurant was very good and well presented, although not the choice advertised on the website. Breakfast was misleading - table service one day, help yourself the next and again, the menu stated Cumberland sausage, which they were definitely not and black pudding which did not materialise. The restaurant staff were friendly but needed some more training and perhaps someone in charge, the young girls did not seem to realise that to continue seating people for breakfasts they first needed to clear from the previous occupants instead of either standing around or just disappearing ! On our second morning the weather was lovely and we wanted to sit outside but were told that this was not allowed because there may be flies !! The girls on reception did a great job, the bar person always had a smile. The Spa a great addition to the stay, loved swimming outside but the spa receptionist seemed like it was the last place she wanted to be and could hardly bother to speak let alone smile. On the whole we enjoyed our stay but would love to see this hotel refurbished and brought up to date even though this may add to the price. Thank you

Hotel itself was very nice, but some of the staff seemed like either needed training or that they did not want to be there. The young blonde lady on reception was lovely but obviously new, the other receptionist did not want to help at all. The evening staff in the spa (blonde lady) didn’t want to talk and I felt that I didn’t want to ask anymore questions as she was not happy anyway. The food was perfect, the waiting staff need a little training as we were not offered the wine list until after we had ordered our meals and been sat there for 15 minutes.

Had a nice time, but my wife and I had a bad experience in the restaurant. For evening meal we had the same starter. It didn’t taste quite right and we both had upset stomachs in the night. The restaurant’s lighting was a little on the bright side and would definitely create a better ambience if was dimmed. Apart from that, everything else was good, especially the cooked breakfast !
