Overview

Maritime Hotel is a clifftop hotel on the Isle of Portland, 20 minutes' drive from Weymouth. Lonely Planet recommends the island's "rich bird life", "starkly beautiful cliffs" and "jaw-dropping views".

You can explore Portland Bill lighthouse for great views of the English Channel or join the South West Coast Path from the hotel and walk to Chesil Beach, for a chance to see rugged clifftops and caves. Chesil Beach, an 18-mile stretch of shingle beach that connects Portland to the maindland, is around and hour's walk along the path, or 10 minutes by car.

The seaside town of Weymouth and its attractions -- including Jurassic Skyline, am observation tower that offers views up to 16 miles away from 174 feet above the ground -- are around 30 minutes' drive away. The town is hosting several events throughout the summer, including Gin Festival Weymouth (3 Jun), Wessex Folk Festival (3-5 Jun), The Pommery Dorset Seafood Festival (8-9 Jul). Durdle Door, a picturesque limestone arch on the Purbeck Heritage Coast, is less than an hour's drive from the hotel.

The Royal Navy were present on Portland until the 1990s, and the hotel is a former Admiralty Under Weapon Establishment -- a naval building where defence weapons were developed and tested. It has since been transformed into a modern hotel enjoying panoramic views of the 95-mile-long Jurassic Coast. The hotel has a restaurant with floor-to-ceilings windows, a bar and an outside terrace.

Confusing to find, did not recognise as a hotel from the outside but on entering the building we were pleasantly surprised

2 large Mastiff dogs in the bar area which connects to the dining room. Bar smelt of dogs and they were sitting on the sofas in the bar. This meant we did not feel able to go to the bar and this reduced our experience. This also because the Manager and Receptionist made it clear that the dogs were there to stay as they were house dogs but this was not a house but a hotel.

Location was fabulous, great sea views, coastal walks excellent. Lovely stylish hotel with great views from restaurant and roof terrace above, and sea view rooms. Only had full english breakfast but this was very good also.

Welcome wasn't the warmest as young receptionist, had issue with our room (wet carpet) which after a bit of negotiating we were upgraded twice, to a deluxe room and then a sea view, as lots of rooms had same problem apparently (seemed odd). But all rooms were lovely, especially sea view so worth upgrading for £20 a night.

Our bedroom was spacious with comfortable beds and a good view.

Minor niggle was that there was no hot chocolate available at breakfast. Also, the bowls and plates provided were ridiculously small. I.e you could not empty a small box of cereal completely into the bowl and the plate had room for one slice of toast, so forget eating ham and cheese etc. off the same plate!

The view from the Dining Room. The breakfast which was inclusive to the deal we had was beautifully cooked and presented. This was however only either a Full English or Vegetariian Sausage option.
Other Comments
The area at the rear of the Hotel for parking was bleak as the surrounding buildings were to say the least almost like a neglected prison!. Cracks were clearly visable on the surrounds to our bedroom windows. There is nowhere to sit outside as the surrounding grassland is owned by the Council and the Children from Playschools use it. We were told ly there was always the 'Terraced Areas' to use to sit outside but this is the only designated SMOKING AREA for guests!! Not for us....The initial receptionists greeted us with virtualyl no eye contact, told us we could not get into our room until after 4.00.pm when we had it on our booking form 3.00.pm. She was what I can only described as 'Intermitent' in her Customer Care going from almost dismissive to really warm and smiley!! There was no Rubber Safety Mat in the bath for using the shower so hen we asked for we given it from behind the counter!
