Why We Love This Hotel

  • This inn on Burford's quaint High Street dates from the 15th century and is Grade II-listed
  • The property is on the edge of the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is 25 minutes' drive from Blenheim Palace
  • The restaurant an AA Breakfast Award
  • Guestrooms are traditionally decorated and some have 4-poster beds

The rolling Cotswold countryside is easily accessible from The Bull at Burford, which is set among a cluster of traditional stone buildings on the bustling High Street of one of the area's most charming towns. This boutique bolthole is housed in a former coaching inn, complete with courtyard and stables, that dates from the 15th century, and is up the street from the Tudor-era Tolsey Museum, which charts the town's history.

Picturesque Bourton-on-the-Water, known for its elegant bridges, is a 20-minute drive away, while Blenheim Palace, birthplace of Winston Churchill and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is around 25 minutes' drive from the inn. Oxford city centre, with its medieval university buildings, is approximately 40 minutes away by car.

There's a rustic-chic feel to The Bull's AA-Rosette restaurant, which features wooden beams, exposed brick walls and smart leather seating, and serves an "imaginative menu" (The AA Hotel Guide 2019) of brasserie-inspired dishes. Guests can also relax in the cosy lounge.

The AA Hotel Guide 2019 praises the "stylish, attractively presented bedrooms that reflect plenty of charm and character". There are 18 rooms, which range from traditionally furnished double rooms with exposed beams, to grander options kitted out with 4-poster beds and living areas. Every room has free Wi-Fi, a TV, and tea- and coffee-making facilities. Dogs can stay for free (please enquire on booking).

We had a nice meal in the restaurant on the day we arrived.

Our room, which was supposedly a 'superior' room was superior only in that it was big. However, with only one very small window, situated in the farthest corner of the room, which looked onto buildings very close by across a narrow alley, this was the dullest, darkest room we have ever stayed in. We had to have the centre light on the whole time (the table lamps were a waste of time as the bulbs in them were so dull). Also, the floor sloped at at enormous angle so that you couldn't put anything on the dressing table, or indeed anywhere else, as it slid off. I understand that it's an old building and these things are inherent but surely they could have put some blocks or something under the furniture to make it usable. Although we were booked in for 2 nights, we actually left after the first night. Also, breakfast was a disaster - there was apparently only one chef working and we were told she was over-run with orders. However, as there were no more than half a dozen couples in the dining room at the time this was hard to believe. We were told there was at least a 15 minute wait for the cooked breakfast but this turned out to be much longer and in the end we just took some fruit and cereal from the buffet. The waitress was very apologetic and clearly not very impressed by the way the kitchen was working.

Quirky kind of place, loads of character, sloping floors etc, great staff - loved it! Lots of stairs, so might not be suitable for some people.

Lovely place very welcoming, we stayed in the courtyard, rooms were large and clean ideal as one of our crowd had mobility issues, beds were comfortable but mattress a little soft. The staff were welcoming and made you feel at home, nothing was too much trouble for them. Breakfast choices were excellent, very fresh and good table service, a little quiet on atmosphere but we put that down to staying at the beginning of the week.

We had a most enjoyable stay. Our room was lovely. The English breakfast was wonderful & included several other hot choices like smoked salmon & Eggs Benedict, with a huge Continental choice as well. We ate there one evening & the food was excellent. The staff were all very pleasant & helpful e.g. in sorting out our leaky shower. Small car park but free parking near by. Only quibble was there weren't enough staff on at breakfast so service was a bit slow, & often no one was about when to ask when you wanted toast, more coffee etc.
