Why We Love This Hotel

  • Bletchley Park, the headquarters of the British codebreakers during World War II, is less than 30 minutes' drive away
  • The hotel's WineGlass Restaurant features an extensive selection of wines and champagnes
  • Woburn Abbey, a Grade I-listed country house, and Woburn Safari Park are both 25 minutes' drive away
  • The riverside hotel has a characterful 13th-century Tithe Barn

Overview

The Barns Hotel is in a "tranquil" (The AA) location beside the River Great Ouse, on the outskirts of Bedford.

Local attractions include Woburn Abbey, a Grade I-listed country house surrounded by historic landscaped gardens and a deer park, and Woburn Safari Park, which has over 1000 animals and offers road and foot safaris. Both are 25 minutes' drive away.

Bletchley Park, famous for being the headquarters of the British codebreakers during World War II, and the site where Alan Turing helped decipher the Enigma code, is 30 minutes' drive away. Grade I-listed Houghton House is less than 20 minutes' drive away -- this ruined mansion has views of the surrounding hunting park and gardens.

You can take a leisurely stroll through the gardens and admire three centuries of landscape design at Grade-I listed Wrest Park -- this country house is 25 minutes from the hotel by car.

The hotel's river-facing WineGlass Restaurant features rustic wooden beams and, as the name suggests, an extensive selection of wines and champagnes available by the glass -- some come from the owners' winery in California. There is also a charming library area within the restaurant. The Riverside Bar, open from lunchtime to late evening, offers casual dining and has a patio overlooking the River Great Ouse. The terrace has a pizza oven, and fresh pizzas are available every Tuesday and Friday throughout the summer.

In summer, you can hire the hotel's electric riverboat for cruises up the River Great Ouse. The hotel is a popular venue for wedding parties.

Bedrooms and suites are traditionally furnished, and have spacious bathrooms and free Wi-Fi.

I had phoned the hotel a few days before arrival to ensure that we had a quiet room and to book a time for our afternoon tea. I had ensured that they were aware of dietary requirements and they said this would be noted and would be no problem. On arrival we only had to wait 15 mins for our room so we went to have a drink. We waited for a pot of tea and that didn't arrive. On enquiring its whereabouts it appeared it had been 'forgotten'. We had our afternoon tea booked for 3pm and was seated at that time. When I had asked about the call I had made re the dietary requirements it was apparent that no note of this had been recorded when I had phoned and therefore had to go through everything that would be suitable for my hubby to eat. When it arrived all the sandwiches were plain and not half and half as would have been expected! Despite this it was a nice tea. After this we had asked if we had to book for our evening meal or could we just walk in. The young waiter had gone to enquire and said we didn't have to book. At 7.30pm we arrived at the restaurant to find that we couldn't just walk in and was wrongly informed. We had to sit and wait for a table to be made up for us . We eventually ordered our main meal but on ordering the dessert which was only ice cream, it arrived extremely runny. We were given a glass of prosecco each for our troubles since arrival but that night I was very ill - mild food poisoning. Later in the morning on our way home my hubby also suffered with mild food poisoning (we had both eaten the same meals). We had been ill the whole day. The staff at the hotel are very polite and can't seem to do enough for you but there is certainly a lack of communication, The room was not that quiet - quiet meaning it was away from the barn where a wedding was taking place but when any of the adjoining rooms had showers the noise was horrendous in our room plus all the doors slamming when people left or entered their rooms.

Breakfast was a bit of a let down and not the most comfortable beds we've slept on. Had to ask for clean towels because the cleaners had put wet towels over a cold radiator.

The Internet system is not very good, we had room 36 and could only get the Internet if we stood by the door or went near the reception area. ! Maybe Hotel need to upgrade to a stronger signal system.
