Overview

The Barns Hotel is in a "tranquil" (The AA) location beside the River Great Ouse, on the outskirts of Bedford.

Local attractions include Woburn Abbey, a Grade I-listed country house surrounded by historic landscaped gardens and a deer park, and Woburn Safari Park, which has over 1000 animals and offers road and foot safaris. Both are 25 minutes' drive away.

Bletchley Park, famous for being the headquarters of the British codebreakers during World War II, and the site where Alan Turing helped decipher the Enigma code, is 30 minutes' drive away. Grade I-listed Houghton House is less than 20 minutes' drive away -- this ruined mansion has views of the surrounding hunting park and gardens.

You can take a leisurely stroll through the gardens and admire three centuries of landscape design at Grade-I listed Wrest Park -- this country house is 25 minutes from the hotel by car.

The hotel's river-facing WineGlass Restaurant features rustic wooden beams and, as the name suggests, an extensive selection of wines and champagnes available by the glass -- some come from the owners' winery in California. There is also a charming library area within the restaurant. The Riverside Bar, open from lunchtime to late evening, offers casual dining and has a patio with views of the River Great Ouse. The terrace has a pizza oven, and fresh pizzas are available every Tuesday and Friday throughout the summer.

In summer, you can hire the hotel's electric riverboat for cruises up the  Great Ouse. The hotel is a popular venue for wedding parties.

Bedrooms and suites are traditionally furnished, and have spacious bathrooms, safe and free Wi-Fi.

We slept well, the bed was really comfortable and although the hotel is near a busy road it was quiet.

The cheeseboard when it finally arrived was good and the breakfast the next morning was good and the girl waiting on us at table was very helpful .

Our room was tired in that the catch on the window was broken and the whole window area needed painting, the wall light in the bathroom was hanging from the wall and the plug in the washbasin would not stay down so we had to run a constant flow of water into the basin .The evening meal took 2 hours to serve us, two cold starters, two mains and a cheeseboard. There were 6/7 members of staff going backwards and forwards but they rarely approached our table and in the end we had to complain loudly about the general lack of service. The meal was not very good, 3 prawns for a sharing platter for two, uneatable calamari which were flaccid and uncooked and i slice of lemon for two people. the main meal consisted of good pork cheeks but a multitude of tiny potato squares and a few very thinly sliced artichokes,

Good experience on the whole, but woken at 5.30am with delivery van beneath our room and noise unloading. Also hot breakfast dishes ran out and were not replenished quickly. Music system in all general rooms including dining area was totally inappropriate and too loud. Had to ask for it to be turned down.

Wonderful staff. Excellent afternoon tea and breakfast. Lovely views of the river. Only problem was a wedding party as very loud music from the Barn so had to close bedroom window room 6 and turn TV louder to midnight.

We had an unfortunate experience at our evening meal as it took over 2 hours to serve us ( as did all the tables that evening) even though we ate early at their request , so was not an enjoyable meal . The waitress dealt with well but obviously the kitchen was having problems
