Overview

The Oakhouse Hotel is in the market town of Axbridge, which has narrow, winding streets and a variety of medieval buildings, on the edge of the Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The Church of St John the Baptist, a striking Grade I-listed building that dates from the 13th century, is less than five minutes' walk from the hotel. King John’s Hunting Lodge, a National Trust property that is nearly 550 years old, is also less than a 5-minute walk away. Nowadays the property is a museum of local history. Axbridge also has an array of independent shops and places to eat and drink.

Cheddar Gorge, an impressive limestone gorge that is England's biggest natural canyon, is a must-see on any visit to the area. We recommend the 3-mile clifftop walk from Lookout Tower to Lion Rock. You can also explore the caves beneath the gorge, which are floodlit to help visitors see the rock formations and their subtle colouring.

The AA 5-star restaurant with rooms has parts that date from the 11th century; its large open fire and exposed brick walls are original features. The AA says that its "stylish mix of old and new" puts the property at the "boutique end of the design spectrum".

The "impressive" 2-AA-Rosette restaurant provides a "high quality experience" and "delivers delightful dishes full of flavour", according to The AA. It also holds an AA Breakfast Award.

Service and the evening meal were excellent
Other Comments
The room was claustrophobic with little light coming through the window. Considering the excellent dinner we had the previous night, breakfast was disappointing . A fruit salad , cheese and cold meats would be simple to add. Also not impressed with the extra supplement for eggs benedict, royale etc with the voucher when the main breakfast was more expensive yet nothing more to pay

The dinner on first night was really good Very comfortable bed with lovely white bedding Coffee percolator in room and great choice of T bags Most of the staff were very friendly and helpful
Other Comments
Certainly not suitable for disabled, we had to go up several series of stairs some rather to reach our room . Unfortunately the sash corded window in our room overlooking the square could not be closed . Would have liked to find more toiletries in the ensuite as they were very basic. Shower over bath again not safe for elderly or disabled persons, the shower screen moved rather too easily if you fell against it or tried to hold on to it .

The establishment doesn't seem to know what it is.........the website states 'hotel' other internet sites refer to it as a 'restaurant with rooms' in our opinion it is a 'pub with rooms' It apparently has a two rosette restaurant but the food/ambience doesn't seem worthy of this. We feel that unless they can market or advertise the building correctly guests will often be disappointed which clearly shows in other reviews. Had I been expecting a pub I may not have been so disappointed.

This was not a hotel but a pub with rooms, We paid for an upgrade to a deluxe room, expecting (as per the website) a kingsize bed which we did not get, a pokey room with an apology of a sofa bed making a seating area was apparently classed as deluxe.........view over the tiny back courtyard which was storing rubbish and something that had a revolting stench. Dinner in the soul less dining room was mediocre ...... I had gnocci in a roasted vegetable sauce with mozzarella..............I suspect I had the last portion as it was extremely mushy and lacking in actual vegetables. We had to remind them of our coffee as they forgot to bring it to us. What we had for breakfast was tasty but they ran out of bread to make toast and there were no Danish Pastries left or fresh fruit................ We checked out early (only stayed one night) as we felt that we wouldnt be able to enjoy the beautiful weather as there is no outside space, apart from a few pub tables in the village square which doubles up as the main car park and these appeared to be taken by young locals enjoying their local pub.............sadly not the envoirment we were expecting.

The Oakhouse were very accommodating with us bringing our dog for the weekend, they even provided him with a bonio for breakfast. These little gestures go a long way.
