Scafell Hotel

Why We Love It

  • The AA-Rosette-awarded restaurant uses local produce and offers a selection of local Cumbrian cheeses
  • The hotel holds VisitEngland Gold and Breakfast Awards, and is in a "peaceful location" (The AA) at the foot of the Great Gable and Scafell Massif mountains
  • The landscape surrounding the hotel is described as "simply spellbinding" by Lonely Planet
  • Derwentwater -- great for lake cruises and walks by the water's edge -- is a 10-minute drive away, and Ambleside Roman Fort is less than 50 minutes' drive away

The dinner menu is confusing. The Travelzoo deal doesn't allow guests the full menu choice. Surcharges apply.

Quiet and comfortable. Staff very friendly
Other Comments
Quiet location so you must be prepared to drive into the nearest town for dinner as the only options are to eat at the hotel - either in the restauarnt or the bar.

We booked this deal to take our two dogs with us, having been before & really enjoyed the whole experience. However, our young dog has got really bad separation anxiety & can't be left alone so we asked if we could eat our evening meal in the bar area. We were told No 'just in case someone else sees you eating something different' We then asked if we could switch to the bar menu and were again told No 'you have booked the deal and it doesn't allow for this' !! Luckily some other kind guests agreed to look after our dogs outside whilst we went into the restaurant. When we booked this deal, we understood we were to have a three course meal. When we came to order, the menu was very limited indeed ( 2 out of the 4 mains were chicken) & we were told that the only starter we were allowed to order was soup or sorbet! It was a very hot evening so soup was just ridiculous. My husband complained to the general manager & was told ( very rudely) that 'you have booked a deal & it's far too cheap, we don't make any profit off it' This is not our fault, we didn't set the price, they did!! We then waited over 30 mins for two pre made desserts! Overall we were made to feel like 2nd class guests because we were on a deal. The general manager was at times supercilious & quite rude. The hotel now looks tired, run down & in need of some general redecoration/ refurnishing. We won't be returning I'm afaid or recommending it to anyone else.
