The Hotel HIVE
Why We Love This Hotel
- DC's first "microhotel" -- great for guests planning to spend all their time seeing the sights and not a lot of time in their rooms
- Rooms for all types of travelers, from twin and bunk bed rooms to adjoining kings
- One of the closest hotels to the Lincoln Memorial, the Reflecting Pool and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial
The brand new Hotel HIVE, opened in February 2017 after a full renovation and rebuild, is the District's first "microhotel" or pod-style hotel, made to accomodate guests who are more interested in affordable style than tons of space. If you're planning to spend a lot of time seeing D.C.'s many sights and aren't planning to spend a ton of time in your room, but you still want a comfortable and amenity-rich spot to stay, the HIVE is for you.
Rooms still feature everything you'd expect from a regular hotel room, and maybe a little more. Bed sizes range from a tight twin room to ones with bunk beds, queen and king sized beds, and feature bathtubs, flat-panel smart TVs, USB charging ports and in-suite Bluetooth speakers. Travelling families can adjoin certain rooms for a little more room to breathe.
Rooms are heavily soundproofed and average about 250 square feet, which is about half that of a normal hotel and that may be a bit tight for some travelers, but the HIVE has lots of amenities that make up for the smaller square footage.
Onsite guests also have access to a rooftop deck as well as a a courtyard deck, a cocktail bar and build-your-own pizza place, along with quick access to Georgetown, Foggy Bottom and the Mall. The HIVE is just a few blocks from the west end of the Mall, putting guests a 15-20 minute walk from the hotel's front door to both the Lincoln Memorial and Georgetown's bustling M Street.
The hotel only has 83 rooms, which means despite the smaller rooms you won't be on top of too much of a crowd. Guests can also take advantage of tech-friendly perks like advance check-in via your smart phone which can then be used to unlock your doors -- no lobby or front desk visit required.
