Opened in October 2016, Tilden Hotel is steps from posh shops and restaurants and serves as a bridge between Union Square and San Francisco's up-and-coming Tenderloin district. Known as an artist’s enclave, the neighborhood maintains the gritty appearance of its rougher days but is experiencing a resurgence of galleries and studios. The boutique hotel’s 1928 façade was kept intact, while the building was overhauled from top to bottom. Open, airy spaces feature cherry wood walls, and the property embraces the local community by curating artwork, furniture and even minibar snacks from small Californian businesses.
The intimate property has just 118 rooms and suites, each featuring white walls with sharp, high-gloss black trimmings as well as handcrafted wood headboards and plantation shutters over the large windows. Modern amenities like iHome docking stations, free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs and minifridges come standard, as well as toiletries by Malin + Goetz and Marvis. Guests can choose between two double beds or one queen/king bed; for additional space, guests can upgrade to suites with second bathrooms and separate living areas with sofa beds. All accommodations feature keyless entry, allowing visitors to access their rooms through an app.
Guests can enjoy Equator Coffee as well as a slew of teas and breakfast pastries at the newly open Cafe at the Tilden. The Douglas Room, also open as of February 2017, is a cocktail-focused restaurant serving seasonal California cuisine to pair with craft spirits and liquors from across the globe. Room service is available from the restaurant. Guests have access to the hotel’s limited fitness center 24 hours a day, and the hummingbird garden found on the ground floor is a quiet retreat from the bustling city beyond the gate.
