Overview

At the end of a myriad of winding country lanes, the 17th-century Buckland Tout Saints Hotel is a welcome sight for weary travellers, set against a backdrop of rolling Devonshire hills. You’ll be staying near the coast, within easy reach of Dartmoor National Park, the sailing town of Salcombe or Greenways, the former home of Agatha Christie.

Exeter city is an hour away by car and is home to an impressive cathedral and Roman tunnels. Alternatively, visit the naval city of Plymouth (a 50-minute drive).

The Georgian exterior sets the tone for the rest of the décor, with elegant chandeliers and lavish curtains. The real highlights, however are the period features such as the fine woodcarvings and moulded ceilings. Plump upholstered chairs before a yawning open fire in the lounge make for a cheery, cosy atmosphere (weather permitting of course).

It’s an intimate affair, with only 16 rooms. Light tones and earthy shades mix in the older bedrooms and suites, along with antique-style furniture including some four-poster beds in the Superior Rooms. Six new bedrooms have a more modern, boutique look. Upgrade to a Master Suite for a separate living and dining room, with views over the lawn. Wi-Fi is free in all.

A 'food-to-fork' ethos guides cooking at the AA-Rosette Queen Anne Restaurant, with produce grown on the grounds or locally obtained organic and seasonal fare. Antique oil portraits gaze down from the pine-panelled walls of thebeautiful dining room.

There’s also alfresco terrace dining in summer, with views over the manicured gardens and valleys beyond best enjoyed with something cold in hand. Traditional Devonshire tea comes complete with scones, clotted cream and finger sandwiches, alongside fine tea or Champagne.

Other Comments
This hotel is remote and if looking for total peace and quiet, it would be a perfect match. However, access for the last couple of miles is down very challenging lanes and for this reason we would be unlikely to return.
