Next door to a lovely city park and a major transport hub, the 5-star Grand Elysée is a great choice for business and leisure travellers to Hamburg. There is a good restaurant selection, top spa facilities and an astounding art collection made up of 1,000 paintings, sculptures and photographs -- one of the best private art collections in northern Germany..
Standard rooms in this large hotel are generously sized, with plenty of space between the bed and other furniture. Highlights include free Wi-Fi, soundproofed windows that you can open, spacious bathrooms with marble baths and complimentary mineral water and fruit. Some of the Park south rooms come with French balconies and views over the neighbouring Moorweide park.
In addition to the small gym and a decent-sized swimming pool, the hotel has a multitude of saunas to experience, with Finnish, “eucalyptus” and infrared varieties.
Restaurant choices include the Piazza Romana, for classical Italian dishes, and Brasserie Flum, with a striking art nouveau ceiling and Parisian-inspired menu (try the seafood). There’s also an oyster bar, the relaxed Boulevard café and the Bourbon Street Bar -- don't miss the jazz and swing band that plays on Thursday-Saturday nights (8pm-1am).
Near to the hotel are the park and the Alster river for strolling, plus the lively HafenCity docklands area and Speicherstadt historic warehouse district. The Dammtor rail station next door is ideal for trips further afield or outside of the city. Highly recommended in Germany’s second biggest city are the International Maritime Museum and the Miniatur Wunderland, a museum of miniatures.
