"The visit was to explore Taunton and on the 2nd night a celebratory dinner for my wife's birthday. Overall we enjoyed our time. However, there are things that could have been better, indeed should have been given the claims of the hotel and the cost. We arrived around 1300hrs and planned to leave our bags and head into Taunton to explore. There was no one on Reception, which would not have concerned us had there been some method of summoning staff. I tracked the receptionist down to be told, in a rather spiky tone, that we were too early to check in. Firstly, the room. We were grateful to have been upgraded, but there were some surprising shortcomings. The bathroom had been recently refurbished and no shaver socket installed. Irritating if one uses an electric razor or toothbrush. There was no fridge in the room and so nowhere to keep the fresh milk and mineral water provided. Not the most pleasant experience drinking both at room temperature. Then there were lapses in housekeeping and maintenance. The basin was blocked and water very slow to runaway. We reported this on the first morning, but it was not rectified. Further, one of the bulbs had blown in the mirror. These were things that would have been obvious on room cleaning. It was irritating too that the shower gel was not replenished after the first night. Nor were the biscuits. The room was generally at a high standard of cleanliness, marred by 2 dead spiders and their webs high up on the wall above the bed. Turning to food, it was well cooked and presented if a little overpriced. It is niggardly to charge an extra £2.50 for Eggs Benedict and other dishes that most would consider normal breakfast items in a hotel of this standard. The A la Carte Dinner menu shown on the website has dishes priced individually. One accepts that the items are indicative only, however, the 2 menus that we were presented with were priced for 2 and 3 courses only. This latter menu was a not very affordable £65. And this without the service charge. On the plus side, the staff, the initial greeting excepted, were splendid; attentive and charming. In a prior telecon I had stated that we would be celebrating my wife's birthday and celebratory truffles were presented at the end of our meal. A nice touch. The hotel setting is pleasingly bucolic and we were satisfied with the experience. But with a little attention and effort it could have been outstanding."

Overview

The Mount Somerset Hotel & Spa is a Regency-era country-house hotel in the countryside near Taunton that has won awards and received wide acclaim from reviewers and hotel guides. It holds four AA Red Stars, which signify Inspectors' Choice status and are The AA's "supreme accolade" for hotels, and three Rosettes for its food, while the The Daily Telegraph praises the "attractive spacious bedrooms" and "cosy but well equipped spa".

Exmoor National Park is a 30-minute drive away, while the Somerset Levels and the Quantock Hills and Blackdown Hills Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty are even closer. Glastonbury -- which is known for its ruined abbey and tor (a hill outside the town that is the centre of several Arthurian legends) -- and Wells Cathedral are both within an hour's drive.

With its high ceilings and sweeping staircase, Mount Somerset Hotel & Spa mixes Regency splendour with modern comforts. Despite the manor's generous size, there are only 19 guest rooms, creating an intimate feel. Décor features floral prints and plush velvet, while original antique furniture preserves a sense of the mansion’s history. Some bedrooms also feature roll-top baths.

There’s a gym and a modest Moroccan-style spa, decorated with mosaics and original ornaments from a traditional hammam. There's also a steam room, a sauna, a hydrotherapy bath and a foot spa. For the brave, there is also a kubel dusche -- an elevated bucket of ice-cold water. Wi-Fi is free throughout.

At the risk of "and another thing", the drive up to the hotel is badly potholed.
