Villasanpaolo Wellness & Spa Hotel is a sprawling complex set on a hilltop in Tuscany, with views of San Gimignano's historic towers. The villa at the heart of the complex dates from the 19th century and it was built on the foundations of a 14th-century convent. The walls are hung with Modernist art by Tuscan artists from the 1960s and '70s.
San Gimignano, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with "medieval streetscapes and enchanting rural setting" (Lonely Planet), is 15-minute drive away. This old walled city is known for its 14 medieval towers, the only remaining of 72 that were built by wealthy inhabitants in a bid to out-do one another. Visit the town's former 11th-century cathedral (known as the Collegiata), which has a series of remarkable 14th-century frescoes; the Galleria Continua, a world-class contemporary art gallery; and the 54-metre Torre Grossa (which you can climb) at the Palazzo Comunale.
The hotel has a 10,760-square-foot spa, with indoor and outdoor hydro pools, a hammam, a sauna, a Turkish bath, an ice fountain and a gym. The Lampolla restaurant serves a buffet breakfast (7:30-10 a.m.), and there's an Italian menu at dinner (7:30-10 p.m.). The hotel also has a café for pizza, snacks and light lunches and dinners. Set in seven acres of gardens and olive groves, the estate produces its own extra-virgin olive oil, and there is a 19th-century orciaia (olive oil store) in the grounds.
Classic Rooms have a traditional feel, and are in the historic villa and the modern wings. All bedrooms have free Wi-Fi.
