This 3-AA-Red star property is a small Victorian country house on the Scottish coast, in the southwest region of Dumfries and Galloway. It has an interesting history -- originally built in 1869 as a hunting lodge, it was the secret location for a meeting between Churchill and General Eisenhower in World War II.

The AA Hotel Guide 2017 describes the lodge as a "haven of tranquility and relaxation" that provides a "sophisticated but intimate home-from-home experience". Set within 30 acres of landscaped grounds, the property overlooks the sea and has its own private pebble beach -- on a fine day, you can see Northern Ireland from the shore.

Dinner is served in the 3-AA-Rosette restaurant, a "genteel, traditional dining room" (The AA), where award-winning head chef Tony Pierce produces a gourmet tasting menu of modern Scottish dishes. The hotel also has a lounge with an open fireplace, and a wood-panelled Whisky Bar which has a selection of over 120 single malts.

The lodge is a 10-minute drive from the seaside town of Portpatrick, home to an old parish church, and Dunskey Castle, a 16th-century cliff-top ruin. Killantringan Lighthouse -- one of the few spots where both the Mull of Galloway and the Mull of Kintyre can be seen at the same time -- is a 20-minute drive away.

The 300-square-mile Galloway Forest Park -- the first Dark Sky Park in the UK, named as one of the best places for stargazing in the world -- is around 45 minutes' drive from the hotel.

Bedrooms are individually designed and offer garden or sea views. Dogs are allowed in certain rooms for an extra £20 per stay. Wi-Fi is free.
