Overview

The 16th-century Noel Arms is one of the oldest inns in the Cotswolds and is set in the pretty market town of Chipping Campden. The coaching inn has a fascinating history and royal connections -- Charles II reputedly stayed during the English Civil War -- and is in an ideal spot to explore the surrounding Cotswolds. A short drive away are Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwick Castle, Blenheim Palace and Cheltenham.

The historic ambiance is kept alive with fine antiques, original log fires and rich fabrics. There are 28 rooms in total, spread across the older part of the property and a modern annex. Expect tea- and coffee-making facilities and en-suite bathrooms with a shower or bath. One of the rooms features a carved four-poster bed that dates back to 1657. In the morning, guests awake to a continental buffet, with a hot full English breakfast served at the table.

The restaurant menu is a mix of contemporary British fare and gourmet curries. Head Chef Indunil Upatissa has won the Best Curry Chef gong at the Great British Pub Awards for the last three years in a row. There's also a little coffee shop open throughout the day, with alfresco tables on the patio.

Guests can also use the spa at sister hotel Cotswold House Hotel & Spa, a 30-second walk away (a supplement applies). Facilities include six treatment rooms, an aromatic steam room, a hydrotherapy pool and a nail bar.

From the press:
  • "Long before more elegant country houses came along, this old coaching inn was famous" -- Frommer's

We were not offered a room upgrade. My evening meal of risotto was very small and I should have said so when it was served. The charge for it was reduced but I was still hungry. The bread and pudding pudding was also small. The meal my partner ordered was fine and great proportions (fish and chips, and lemon meringue). He enjoyed it but I had to sit and watch him eating it having finished my meagre portions well in advance of him. I am toying with returning to this hotel with friends for a weekend in September, but my experience with the meal is making me hesitate. Motto of the story is to complain immediately when something can be done.

We enjoyed the upgraded room on the second night - this was not available on the first night.

The reception staff were four star throughout our break. The weekend male restaurant and breakfast staff were untrained -they were not clearing tables or preparing tables correctly and were not customer focused or attentive. The mid week staff were very good.
