"The southern gateway to the Lake District is… less touristy than the other towns to the northwest," says Fodor’s about the pretty market town of Kendal. The Riverside Hotel is situated next to the River Kent, within walking distance of the town's restaurants, cafés, galleries and railway station.
Be sure to try the Kendal mint cake, a local speciality at one of the many cafés. Also in the area are the Kendal Museum, the Brewery Arts Centre and the ruins of a 12th-century castle. It's a 20-minute drive to Lake Windermere and attractions such as the World of Beatrix Potter.
The hotel was originally a converted 18th-century tannery and still has an impressive façade. On site, there's a small heated indoor pool, a steam room and sauna, and a gym. Wi-Fi is free, as is a full buffet breakfast, including hot options. The restaurant also serves dinner.
The bedrooms are simple, with a neutral décor throughout, and many have views over the River Kent. The hotel is dog friendly, although seven bedrooms are kept "fur free" -- request one of these at booking if this is important
