"The staff were wonderful and welcoming. The waitress in the restaurant was lovely and helpful. The food was not good. I would not eat there again. The museum of Shenandoah was worth visiting. I wouldn't plan to stay at the hotel again, because there are lots of other places we want to visit."

Overview

George Washington has been an integral figure in Winchester, Virginia, since the city's inception in 1752 when his troops were stationed nearby. Today, his presence is still felt in the Shenandoah Valley town, where his office remains, preserved, and landmarks have been named in his honor, including this Wyndham Grand Hotel.

Built in 1924, this renovated Georgian Revival property retains many historical features, including the brick facade, high ceilings and ornate crown molding, though guest rooms have been modernized with complimentary Wi-Fi.

The impressive indoor pool is modeled after a Roman bath house and accented with white marble columns, sculptures and a whirlpool tub. For further relaxation, guests can book a treatment at the Saumaj Health Spa.  Fill up on classic American cuisine at the on-site George’s Food & Spirits, open all day. Daily happy hour specials are offered at Half Note Lounge, with live entertainment on the weekends.

Within a mile of the hotel, visitors can reach the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley, Washington’s office and Stonewall Jackson’s headquarters. Country music fans can pay homage to Patsy Cline, as the star’s birthplace and grave site are on the edge of town. Perched at the top of the Shenandoah Valley, the hotel is a convenient starting point for hiking, cavern visits and wine tasting through the area's popular wine trail.

I did like the location next the walking mall and I did appreciate the way it has been restored leaving in tact a vintage feeling. The bed was comfortable.

The closing of doors in the hallway was really loud and we could hear a person clearly talking in the room next to us. Our shower leaked a lot of water all over the floor, We tried the hot tub but the chemical smells were just too overwhelming. It needs better circulation down there.

We came to the area to meet up with our daughter from Baltimore. Winchester was a relatively easy drive for her and gave us plenty of shopping, eating, and entertainment options. The George Washington is truly a lovely, full service hotel. The pool was fabulous and we enjoyed how close we were to the Old Town Winchester pedestrian mall. The hotel and the restaurant offered good food that kept us from having to go out in the cold and the rain our first night there. We also enjoyed the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley, which we probably would have missed had the hotel not given us free passes.

Next time I would prefer a king size bed instead of two doubles.

Everything but the train!
Other Comments
The fact that trains pass a stones throw from Hotel. And yes the train whistle woke us up 3 time! Not a good night. So if you are on the train side of hotel you had better be a sound sleeper.
