Overview

The Lamplighter Dining Rooms is a family-run hotel in the heart of Windermere town. The property dates back to 1865, and is built from Lakeland stone.

The hotel is a 15-minute walk from Lake Windermere -- "the queen of Lake District lakes" (Lonely Planet). Rough Guides recommends hiking up to Orrest Head (10 minutes' walk) for the panoramic views. National Trust-run Hill Top, the house Beatrix Potter bought with the royalties from her books, is 30 minutes' drive from the hotel. Dove Cottage, where poet William Wordsworth lived, is a 20-minute drive away. You can take a guided tour of the house and gardens, and visit The Wordsworth Museum, which displays his original letters, journals and poems.

The restaurant serves traditional British dishes, and was a Taste Cumbria Dining Experience of the Year finalist in the 2016 Cumbria Tourism Awards. The Guardian's critic Jay Rayner is a fan of the "glorious" bone-on rib of beef and a "magnificent" cauliflower cheese, which are served at Sunday lunch. The bar stocks local ales, wine and over 15 varieties of gin. There is a roaring fire in the winter.

In keeping with the 19th-century building, bedrooms have a Victorian look, with striped wallpaper and polished-wood beds. All have renovated bathrooms.

The toilet in our room wasn't working. However, a quiet word with the bar manager and we were moved to another (superior) room. Problem solved - great service - no fuss. In fact the service - greeting, bar/restaurant and breakfast - was excellent. So too were the dinner and breakfast. Great food and beautifully presented. If we're in the area again, we shall certainly stay at the Lamplighter Dining Rooms.
